1. You would need a bachelors or a masters degree if you have also shadowed a social worker in this figured that would be a huge plus because you would already know the inns and outs of this job

2. A typical day would be coming to work at 8:30 and leaving to go home about 5:30 sometimes I do tend to stay a bit longer because we have so many new admissions. My day consists of also I’m making my rounds and visiting the patients I talk to the patients I make sure that they have everything they need and I also ensure that their needs are being met. It can sometimes be a little bit stressful and busy but I really enjoy the work that I am doing I feel as though I am making a difference and I feel as though social workers are really important in this line of work.

3. You must always have a great attitude you have to remind yourself that these patients need you you have to think about their well-being and you also have to ensure that their needs are being met. I also believe that you have to have love and kindness and patience because you are there to help others you should always make the patient feel at home and you should always make them feel as though they can always talk to you If something it’s bothering them. I feel as though being a social worker you’re an advocate for patients you speak for them when they cannot speak for themselves

4. Cultural competence plays a big role because patients are from all types of different backgrounds and all types of different religions you must always remember to have respect for where that patient came from or that patients religion.

It plays a big role because like I said in the previous question there’s a lot of people that come from different backgrounds and religions here at my workplace And you always have to remember to show respect and also show some interest and some of the things that they are saying because a lot of times they just want someone to talk to and they just want someone to listen and I believe this plays a huge part in being a social worker in this type of setting.

And example of cultural competence Awareness in the workplace is if a A patient has a different religious background then you always remember to respect that patients religion and to not try to argue or form an opinion about their religion you should always remember to keep in mind that everyone comes from a different background and everyone has a different religion so if a patient has a difference of religion than you just make sure that you show them respect. I also believe if a patient is talking to you about their background or their religion that might Be different from your background or religion try and show some interest in what they might be saying don’t be dismissive

7. Some ethical dilemmas that Can exist is that sometimes people have a difference of opinion and that can sometimes cause conflict or friction throughout the workplace I believe it can sometimes be hard for people to understand that others have a difference in opinion than they do

One time about three or four years ago I had two patients that were sharing a room and during the Thanksgiving holiday one the patients started to decorate her side of the room but the other patient did not like that fact that her roommate was decorating her side of the room with Thanksgiving decorations because she felt as though it was a sign of disrespect towards the Native American community it was starting to cause a rift between the two roommates one of the nurses even came and brought it to my attention abs when she did I decided to pay the roommates a visit and I sat down with both of them and helped them talk through the issues that they were both having I reminded them that we all have a a difference in opinions and we must respect each other’s differences. I also reminded the other patient that her room mate is welcomed to decorate her side of her room how she likes because it was her side.

9. Some of the challenges that exist is sometimes not being able to help everyone because it is beyond the scope of the social worker. It saddens me all the time when I am not able to help everyone , or even have to say “no” sometimes. I truly go into the social worker field because I really wanted to help others and make a difference.
