Intervention Selection and Application Assignment
Organizational development interventions are vital in an organization's successful functionality and productivity. OD interventions work as building blocks designed to improve the functionality of an organization through member participation. They also help ensure that employees and employers achieve set goals and objectives while upholding ethical conduct and teamwork. The City Center Hospital faces complex issues in its interaction, which negatively impacts the organization's general functionality. In a hospital setting, nurses, doctors, physicians, and all care providers must work in harmony and alongside each other for positive patient care and productivity. The City Center Hospital is experiencing poor work relationships among these people, derailing the general service provision and patient outcomes. With the poor leadership, poor communication, and interactions at the hospital, there is a need for an OD intervention to restore the organization's functionality (White & Mitchell, 2019). The issues in City Center require behavioral interventions through techniques such as role-playing, sensitivity training, and grid development. In this assignment, I will discuss the sensitivity training behavioral technique as a selected OD intervention.
Sensitivity training is a standard organizational development intervention method that utilizes counseling methods to increase employee well-being, self-awareness, and sensitivity to other people. Sensitivity training aims at changing the behavior of people by use of unstructured group interactions. It involves about 10-15 members who come together in a selected place, away from workplaces, to discuss themselves freely. During the group discussion, the sensitivity training requires a facilitator to help in facilitating the process.
Sensitivity training is a vital intervention regarding the issue at City Center Hospital. The hospital is currently undergoing complex matters in the interaction of the workforce due to poor leadership and poor working relationships. Therefore, since sensitivity training is a behavioral intervention technique, it would be vital in establishing the main issue transpiring amongst the workers to ensure that a viable and valid solution is found (Nistane, 2017). Since this method is practical, it will allow all the participants, including nurses, doctors, physicians, and other care providers, to freely and independently learn about their behaviors and develop an interactive session to behavioral changes. This intervention is also applied to the City Center's case study since it fosters an easier understanding of how group interactions work. In a hospital setting such as City Center Hospital, teamwork or group work is essential for collaboration. No one works independently in a healthcare setting; doctors need nurses, physicians need doctors and care providers. The collaborative working relationship is vital in ensuring a positive patient outcome and the organization's success in general. Therefore, the relevant parties will need to change their behaviors and interact harmoniously for a collaborative work relationship with the sensitivity training intervention.
During sensitivity training, 10 to 15 people converge at an accessible place away from the work environment to discuss themselves and interact. In the case of City Center, we will use the cousin-lab T-group type since all participants work in the same organization but different units. At the start of the sensitivity training, the group experienced a lack of direction, formal agenda, and recognized status (Nistane, 2017). Then the trainer opens up by being nondefensive and empathetic, and this then creates interpersonal relationships. Lastly, the facilitator tries exploring the relevance of the experience through feedback, interviews, and problem-solving.
In conclusion, the City Center Hospital is effacing complex issues in its functionality due to behavioral aspects among the employees. OD interventions are essential to address these issues. Behavioral techniques such as sensitivity training are paramount in such a case since it fosters a collaborative work relationship, which is critical in healthcare settings.
