For the right decisions concerning effective animal services, data need to be developed and utilized. Data refers to the statistics and facts that are collected together for analysis and references. According to chapter 5 reading, the data provided shows the current population and shelter dogs in America. From the statistics given, it is evident that the household in America with dogs had more dogs before. This information then means that the population of dogs has been decreasing over time. Secondly, data has shown that many America wished to get a dog to adopt but unable due to a shortage of dogs in the states. Without data, it could have been tough for researchers to establish the findings. The researchers could have lacked the figures to compare the current and previous population of dogs in America. Additionally, data has also provided information concerning the shelter, ownership, and health status of the dogs. Therefore, data is critical as it ensures that effective decisions concerning the animals are made.
The finding that America has a shortage of dogs may require some policy decisions. According to the last page of the chapter's readings, for the shortage issues to be solved, the American government should enforce strict breeding standards based on the agreement on the certification of the animals. The breeding standards would ensure that dogs are taken care of by the owners and are not chased out. This policy will help in increasing the populations of dogs. Secondly, the law of transparency among owners, pet shop owners, breeders, pet doctors, and pet vendors should be enforced. This policy will ensure that they are transparent with what they do. Hence, the health and welfare of dogs would be improved. Additional information that may be relevant in making these decisions regards the treatment of dogs when they get sick. Are they taken to pet doctors, or are they just left there to die without getting proper medical attention.

It can be a traumatic experience for folks who love their pets but cannot afford vet care when sick or injured. I have encountered vet clinics that will care for the animal if you surrender the pet or qualify for credit. Increasingly, vet care businesses are being managed like hospitals, same business model. Charging for every thing but I think generally, folks will go into debt to get the care their animal needs.

I agree that some policy decisions would be beneficial for addressing a dog shortage. I really like what you had to say regarding transparency laws. When it comes to information about treatments, history, health, and so on, additional information can prove beneficial and even be enlightening. I know that I would be very interested in more complete information regarding what pet shop owners, breeders, etc., do, and I’m sure that there's plenty of people that would feel the same. I'm not sure what the process for improving the standards and enforcing better practices is like, but I think that it'd be great to see.
