In Marxist Theory, social activities are examined as to how they help gain or maintain social status and/or economic power. Most everyone wants to be one or any combination of the the following: liked, admired, popular, rich, and/or powerful.

Please choose one of the following short stories-- “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, “Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan, “The Garden-Party” by Katherine Mansfield, OR “Paul’s Case” by Alice Walker-- to explain what social activity in the story is being used to gain or keep social and/or economic power. Be sure to be specific about what the characters are doing and how the activity is about trying to gain influence of some sort.
