In Chapter 1 of the textbook, the author talks about the idea of vision statement, which is the statement that illustrates an organization’s ultimate goal. An effective vision statement should be inspiring and forward-looking, which helps employees find meaning in their work and motivate them to pursuit the same goal. A good vision statement can also help the organization make decisions that align with its goal. It can be seen as a foundational document that guides the company’s direction now and in the future. A strong vision statement can also help differentiate an organization from others by setting its goal to be inspiring others rather than just being profitable. For example, Patagonia’s vision statement is “build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.” This vision statement is aspirational and clear, it sets the tone for the company that they aim to offer products that are eco-friendly to the environment, and it also shows to the public that they will run their business to carry that environmental policy to a global level.
I believe it will be beneficial for my client, the VR Café, to have a well-written vision statement since the company is lack of a main long term goal. By setting a vision statement, they can think about what they ultimately want to accomplish. This will help them to make plans and decisions for the company. My client was not satisfied with their previous employee’s performance. I think a strong vision statement will help them with employment issues in a way. It is necessary for employers and employees to have a common goal so that employers know what kind of essentials they are looking for from employees, and employees understand what they need to achieve. An inspiring vision statement can motivate employees to show up with enthusiasm and experience a greater sense of purpose through work. If employees are motivated to keep good performance, in turn, can improve the company’s financial performance.
An excellent example of vision statement I found is American Express. Their vision statement is “provide the world’s best customer experience every day.” American Express is one of the most successful financial service companies in the United States which offer credit card services. Their vision statement could have said something about having the best credit cards in the world. But instead, they want to go beyond their products to speak to what they ultimately want to achieve, which is to be the best in customer experience. This goal is lofty and inspiring. And their success proves they achieve that goal.
Based on my previous experience of team work, I think effective communication is definitely the key to success. Communication is the foundation that team work can be built upon. When communication within the team is skillful, there are higher chances for good ideas and best practices to happen. Team members should all work hard to establish a supportive environment, when people feel supportive, they are more willing to work harder. I once have a bad experience of team work for a class. Someone in the team assumed that the assignment was easy, so we just split the work, and everyone work on their own. However, my part of work needed to be done based on other team member’s work, and that team member didn’t finish his work on time, so I was quite rush for completing the assignment. After that experience, I learned all team members should talk, think, and work together rather than on an individual base. In my opinion, great communication can be achieved by having face to face communications, planning team meetings ahead, and showing appreciation to others.
