It is common for sports stories to connect to historical moments and sociological concepts. Greek philosophical ideas help us understand the idea of the hero. The history of civil rights in the U.S. helps us understand the film 42. Gender issues surface in Dare to Dream. There is always a context for our stories. Sometimes it is spelled out in the story, and sometimes there are aspects that are not explicitly considered.

For this assignment, you will be exploring an idea that reaches a sports story beyond the bounds of the details of the story. For example, the story of Cubs fan Steve Bartman says a great deal about fandom and the affect fans have on how stories are told and remembered. A research paper placing that story in the context of the psychology of sports fans could have as a thesis:  The hysteria found in the story of Steve Bartman, the man who became the hated scapegoat for the the Chicago Cubs' loss in Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS, can be explained through the psychology of sports team identification. In this case, it is “the psychology of sports team identification” that you would need to research.

A League of Their Own is a film that uses sports to reveal how women's societal roles were changing in the 1940s in great part due to World War II. A paper using this context as the basis for the research paper could have as a thesis:  A League of Their Own is much more than a movie about the first women's professional baseball team;  it also tells the story of the changing roles of women in US society during World War II.

For this assignment, you will to select a work, literature or a full-length film not covered in class and not used as an example, that you feel fits a historical or social context.  Then, you will develop a thesis statement that indicates how you will relate your selected work to the social/historical issue.

The next step is to conduct college-level research to develop that thesis. This research will result in the creation of an Annotated Bibliography. The directions for this assignment, along with an example and the rubric that will be used to grade it follow.

What is the Purpose of an Annotated Bibliography?

· To gather and summarize information into one document about the historical/sociological topic that you are researching related to the film you have chosen

· To create a quick reference sheet which will remind you of what your various sources presented and how they are useful to your paper

· To preserve a record of research about your topic which may be shared with others in your field

How do I create One?

1. Make an MLA works cited list of (five) 5 sources you’ve found on your topic. Bold the Works Cited entries and indent correctly. These should be the strongest sources you have found, which means you will probably have to find an investigate at least 10. A great resource for MLA format rules is the MLA Format and Style Guide. Be sure to use the 8th edition rules.

2. Beneath each citations, write an annotation paragraph. These will not be bolded. Each will include:

a. A summary of the type of information in the source

b. An evaluation of the author’s background or ethnicity. You will need to do additional research into the author, the organization, and/or the publication.

c. An explanation of how the source can be used to develop your preliminary thesis.

3. Organize your citations of alphabetically, using hanging indentations (traditional Works Cited page format). See the MLA Format and Style Guide for details about MLA formatting for works cited citations.

Source Requirements

· You must include a minimum of 5 sources for your final annotated bibliography

· No source can be encyclopedia (including Wikipedia or specialized encyclopedias).

· No source can be a blog

· Three sources must be from JWU Library database Academic Search Complete (EBSCO) or History Reference Center (EBSCO). If you cannot find relevant sources through these databases, please let your instructor know during your initial research so another database can be recommended.

· All sources must be appropriate for college-level academic research.

Annotated Bibliography Example

Topic: Coach Carter – effect of poverty on education

Thesis: The film, Coach Carter, helps the viewer understand the effects of poverty on academic achievement.

This article provides interesting information about the progress in reducing the educational gap between African-American and Caucasian children. It also indicates, in graphic terms, growing achievement gaps between rich and poor children, and those gaps are traced from kindergarten through college. The author reports on economic issues for the business section of the New York Times, making him qualified write about the subjects covered in the article. The details the article includes about the gaps in education between those from affluent backgrounds and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds make this article a strong resource for developing my thesis.

The amount of relevant data presented in this article will help me to develop the idea that poverty is clearly connected to a lack of academic achievement. While there is no author named, the fact that it is published in Phi Delta Kappan, which is a professional journal for educators, gives me confidence that the information is reliable and credible. This article’s subheading is “How poverty affects education outcomes,” which is directly related to my thesis, and I know the information will be invaluable.

Rumberger, Russel. “Poverty and High School Dropouts.” The SES Indicator. May 2013, American Psychological Association, www.apa.org. Accessed 15 June 2019.

This article provides data on the outlook for students who drop out of high school and the connection of dropout rates to socio-economic status. It compares the job prospects, earnings, likelihood of committing a crime and being incarcerated, and economic status of students who do not graduate with students who do graduate. The author is a Ph.D. in education and teaches at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a well-published expert who is a very credible authority on the topic of poverty and academic achievement. The connection of poverty to dropout rates and the negative results of dropping out makes this a valuable resource for my paper.

This article presents valuable statistics about the dropout rate in the ninth grade by income bracket. While the information is very valuable, and the publication is credible, I will have to carefully consider using this as a source since the author is virtually anonymous, identified only by initials. However, the inclusion of specific data in the article would certainly help to clarify the point that poverty has a tremendous impact on academic achievement.

This article clearly explains the disparity in education between affluent communities and poorer neighborhoods. In addition to discussing the scope of the disparity, the author also explains the differences by reviewing the history of public education in the United States. Alana Semuels is a staff writer for The Atlantic, and, while that credential does not make her an expert on the topic, the fact that The Atlantic is one of the oldest and most-respected magazines in the United States makes this article very reliable. I will use the information in it to provide valuable background information on the effects poverty has on the education systems in less privileged neighborhoods.
