Reflect on what you have learned and experienced throughout this course

I learned Diversity is more than mixing a group of races in a room, diversity is about using the proper pronouns to address someone, I learned diversity is about finding common grounds of communication. Also diversity is finding things in common outside of what society deems as normal for your race, gender, culture, sexual orientation.

Diversity tells a story for my African American race it is coming out the bondage of slavery, it about about getting new laws and be treated as what I am referred as African American.

Diversity for the african american is adapting to social injustices and social change but most of all diversity is not a one size fit all on a un level playing field.

How do you see your shifting awareness of diversity affecting your future?

My definition has shifted from a narrow point of view of just being together to a broader spectrum of how we are together for example respect, tolerances for differences curiosity not judgment and with openness.

In reflecting on what I've learned the past eight weeks, I can say with confidence that I've learned beyond what the basic knowledge of diversity is. It's more than just different ethnicities and nationalities...it's different cultures, different values, different forms of communication, etc. Specifically, learning about intersectionality (which I had never heard of before this class), implicit vs. explicit bias, understanding the importance of recognizing and utilizing the pronoun preference of another individual, and seeing how all of these things come together in society has brought me the opportunity to listen, learn, and grow. This shift of awareness will continue to allow me to communicate effectively with my community and coworkers or clients I will engage with in the future. My profession being in human services, it is crucial that I understand the importance of diversity and embrace it to it's full capacity.

This has been one of my favorite courses I've taken at SNHU. Thank you, Dr. Graves, for a wonderful eight weeks!
