Hypothesis Draft Examples Example 1: BAD Hypothesis: Tuna living in cold water are healthier than tuna living in warm water.

Independent Variable: Tuna living in cooler water or tuna living in warmer water.

Dependent Variable: The health and size of the tuna in cold water.

What’s wrong? Independent variable is actually the temperature of the water, not what was listed. The dependent variable is not specific enough- what is meant by health? Why is size not included in the hypothesis? Example 2: BETTER

Hypothesis: CBD is a potential better alternative medicine for pain, anxiety, and other health conditions. Especially for those that are opioid dependent, because CBD can treat addiction as well.

How could this be improved? Again, we need more specificity on the dependent variable. What bar you do have to cross to be considered a "better" treatment - how will you demonstrate that it is performing better than another treatment? I also think the scope is too broad—maybe look at pain OR anxiety OR another health condition. Just pick one! Example 3: GREAT

Hypothesis: Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 have an increased risk of developing a pulmonary embolus than hospitalized patients without COVID-19.

Independent Variable: Patients with COVID vs patients without COVID.

Dependent Variable: Those that develop a Pulmonary embolus while hospitalized vs those that don’t.

Things that make this good: This hypothesis is predictive and it’s testable. Also note the inclusion of only hospitalized patients (people who aren’t hospitalized have mild cases, and would be way less likely to develop a PE, so this is in effect a good control).
