MAPPING A RACIAL LANDSCAPE ON CAMPUS

Assignment: Using just a pencil and paper, I want you to record a ‘racial landscape’ on another college campus in the state. Be sure to record both the spatial and place-making aspects of this context.

Begin by reading Denis Woods' chapter on the political functions of maps and think about the types of social information that is excluded from normative representations of space. Then try to record the missing social (i.e. racial) information of your context in a map of your own.

In Part #1: DESCRIBE your racial landscape by creating two complimentary maps: the first one should describe this context in Cartesian or spatial terms; while the second should describe some hidden social, cultural, or political dimension in place-making terms. Scan both images and upload them onto Blackboard for your classmates to see.

In Part #2: Using 1-2 pages of text, ANALYZE the racial landscape you have recorded. Explain why you chose the mapping strategies you did for each map. Then discuss at least two points from Denis Woods' chapter on the political functions of maps to make your case. Cite at least two passages from Woods’ chapter using the Chicago Style.
