Sherlock Holmes and Critical Thinking
One of the masters of “critical thinking” was Sherlock Holmes. This character created by the English author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, embodied in his adventures some of the purest forms of inductive and deductive reasoning and critical analysis.
Homework Assignment: Pick any Sherlock Holmes novel or movie that is listed on the CANVAS site. It must be authored by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Read it or watch it. Rather than getting “caught up” in the plot, try to examine the Holmes character and how he reasons (meta-analysis). In other words, try to pretend that you are Dr. Watson as you examine how Holmes “teaches you” to deduce right along with him. It might be very helpful for you to watch the video more than once in order to try to be “objective” in answering the questions below.
PLEASE NOTE: There are a lot of "knock-off" Sherlock Holmes movies, shows, and stories not written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Please please make sure you pick one from the list on CANVAS. Ones not on the list will not be accepted.

What are some of the ways that Holmes uses on you to help you understand his thinking? How does inductive and deductive reasoning influence the way Holmes solves his case? How does Holmes use evidence to come to a conclusion?
3. In your opinion, what are some of the ways that Holmes uses and doesn't use to arrive at the correct answers that he does? Use some of the material presented in class and in your own research that defines critical thinking to answer this question.
4. Again, in your opinion, what could Holmes do to help you understand the path he is taking so you aren’t as “lost” as you are when watching him solve a problem? In other words how could he make it easier for you to solve the problem along with him?
5. What separates you personally from thinking just like Sherlock Holmes? Answer this question as yourself and not Dr. Watson!
