History of the Internet

History of the internet

Yes, it was created by the government

ARPANET – Advanced Research Projects Agency Network

Mission – to communicate between nodes on a network to (a) send messages in case of war and (b) provide redundancy – move backups of data from one location to another in case of nuclear attack

1969 – the year first transmission was sent on the network.

No government runs the Internet – the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), made up of computer scientists & electrical engineers, approves standards

Definition of the Internet – a network of networks

The four original nodes: UC Berkley, U of Utah, Stanford, and UCLA

Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn are considered the “fathers” of the Internet

2

Evolution of the internet & its protocols

Other dates

1972: ARPANET nodes increase to 23, Ray Tomlinson invented e-mail

1973: TCP/IP protocol was created, but would not become the standard for transmitting data for another decade

1976: Widespread distribution of UNIX

1979: USENET (User Network) developed, connecting students at Duke and UNC

1983 – TCP/IP adopted as universal Internet communication standard

1988 – first Internet Worm – the Morris Worm - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_worm

Other dates

1991 – development of World Wide Web by Dr. Tim-Berners-Lee in Switzerland, @ CERN laboratory; Gopher at U of Minnesota

1993 – MOSAIC – first fully functional graphical web browser, by Marc Andreesen @ Univ of Illinois

1994 – creation of Yahoo by Filo and Yang at Stanford; Netscape Navigator

1995 – Netscape goes public; introduction of Java programming language, which runs on any computer and in any browser; Microsoft Internet Explorer; Windows 95

2000 – first recorded Denial of Service attack by Mafiaboy

2004 – Facebook

2006 - Twitter
