American History essay.
Topic:
Cherokee Removal - The “trail of tears”- this needs to deal with the removal in a balanced way, exploring some leadership conflicts among the Cherokee themselves, and slavery as practiced by the Cherokee needs mentioning.
Grade Rubric: In your research paper I will be looking for a cohesive, well organized, thoughtful essay dealing with some key aspects of your topic. The essay needs to follow the length guidelines, and include the section at the end on explaining what stood out to you in your exploration of your subject. Note that plagiarism will result in an F - zero points - on the essay. All these requirements are explained here in the directions in detail.
Due Date: The essay is due on April 27, 2020.
Here are directions for the Research essay:
1.Length/format: It should be three - four pages of text, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font, page margins of 1 inch. Maximum length, three and a half pages. The minimum of 3 pages of text means three pages of actual text – it does not include your name, title of essay, date, citations at end, or any other strategy to use things peripheral to the text to lengthen the essay. No more than 3 direct quotes from any source are allowed.
2.Writing: The essay should be a standard paper divided into paragraphs, starting with an introductory paragraph having several body paragraphs, and ending with a conclusion.
NOTE: As part of your conclusion you need to address this question:
*What did you find most compelling about the topic you chose, and why? That is, what stood out to you and why? Here it is appropriate to use phrases such as “I think that….”
3. Plagiarism and Citations : All your writing needs to be in your own words, not copied off the internet. Copying someone else’s writing is intellectual theft, and it is called plagiarism. Here is a definition of plagiarism:
Plagiarism: At Las Positas, plagiarism is the act of representing the work of another as one’s own (without giving appropriate credit). Plagiarism at Las Positas includes but is not limited to:
The act of incorporating ideas, words, sentences, paragraphs, or parts thereof, or the specific substance of another’s work, without giving appropriate credit, and representing the product as one’s own work
Plagiarism in the essay will result in an F (zero points) on the essay.
Citations:
Even with your own words, you need to cite your sources for the information. A citation tells me from where you got the information in your essay. For citations use either MLA or Chicago style (a good website explaining this is Purdue University’s citation section - https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_in_text_citations_the_basics.html).
You need at least four (4) sources for your essay. They should be listed at the end of the essay.
Here is an acceptable way of doing your citation: Author, Title of book or article, publisher, Publication date, URL, Retrieval date.
Here is an example:
Felluga, Dino. Guide to Literary and Critical Theory. Purdue U, 2003,
www.cla.purdue.edu/english/theory/. Accessed 10 May 2006.
In addition to the 4 citations at the end of the essay, include in-text citations when you refer to, summarize, paraphrase, or quote from another source. In-text citation means you put the citation right after each sentence or paragraph. The in-text citation is only the author’s last name and page number in bracket. If no author, name of article and page number. Every paragraph should have at least one citation. Here is an example of in-text citation:
(Felluga, 33)
