Essay Question

· This is worth 50 points (half the exam.)

· The essay should cover a minimum of 3 blue book pages; more is encouraged as time allows.

· It is crucial to include the events listed next to each outline point, but other historical details should be included, as well.

· You will be required to answer the following question from the class lectures:

Explain how the argument over whether the West would be slave-soil or free-soil pulled the North and the South farther and farther apart between 1820 and 1860, eventually culminating in the Civil War.

This is the required outline. Points will be deducted for failure to use this outline.

Introduction – Briefly state points

II. Conquering Territory – Include sectional issues over TX & the Mexican War

III. Congressional Competition – Include Wilmot Proviso, Compromise of 1850, KS-NE Act, Senate Caning

IV. Party Realignment – Include Whig collapse, Free-Soil Party, Republicans & Lincoln, Democrats’ changes

V. Final Fiascos – Include Bleeding Kansas, John Brown, and secession following Lincoln’s election
