It will be Synthesis 1 day -- You will be asked to write two short essays in class demonstrating your ability to "synthesize" the new information you have learned from your course readings. To "synthesize" means to pull together different facts and ideas into a a coherent story or argument. It's like finding patterns and making connections.

To prepare, please review all the notes you've taken so far, and re-read Popkin, chapter 3. Come to class prepared to write about two topics:

(1) What is the Enlightenment? (= Identify this period of intellectual history). How did it affect the perspectives of historians? (See Popkin, Ch. 3) -- worth 3 points.

(2) Make three connections between any Monday reading so far (Popkin Ch. 1 & 2, and the Introductory reading), and your section readings -- worth 3 points.
