Hello Class,

Each week I will post hints and tips on the assignment due for that week.  You have a critical thinking assignment due this week so let's get started.

Enterprise Project Management

I have had several students in previous PJM500 classes ask me what exactly is Enterprise Project Management?  Much of the literature may not seem consistent.  This question is part of our Week 1 Critical Thinking assignment.  Here are my brief descriptions to help get you started.

First, let’s start with Enterprise Management.  Enterprise Management is the management of an entire organization under a common mission and vision.

Enterprise Project Management (EPM) is a philosophy or methodology for managing all projects in a similar way regardless of department or function they originate from.  The benefit of this is all projects will be following processes set up to align with the organization’s strategic goals.  EPM methodologies are commonly managed by a PMO (Project Management Office).

EPM is not like a project, it does not have a start and end date.  It will continuously improve as the organization changes and matures.  The idea is that if an organization manages its multitude of projects using the same methodology and tools driven by the organization's strategic goals, the organization as a whole will be more successful.  The methodology is simply the processes, tools, and techniques for managing projects.

Here is an industry articles on an EPMO from cio.com

Paper Expectations

There are five sections to the body of your paper in addition to the Introduction and Conclusion.  You may use these titles for your subheadings if you would like.  The details of each section are in the assignment instructions.

Enterprise Project Management Methodology (EPM) Definition

Project Management Office (PMO) Definition

John Compton’s Key Requirements of the EPM Compared to the PMBOK Project Life Cycle Phases

Global Project Management Methodology Aspects

Project Management Systems (PMS)

Within these five subsections, I have seen the following problems more than once.  In the first two sections, be sure to define EPM and PMO not just discuss examples of them.  In the third section there are few requirements from John Compton in the case study.  You only need to write about what is there and compare it to the PMBOK.  The ones to look for are the number of project management life cycles he wanted and how that compares to the PMBOK, what he required on training and templates, and how long he wanted the development to take.  There are many articles on the aspects of global project management methodologies.  You are looking for aspects such as challenges with time zones, cultures, languages, laws, regulations and so on.  You will have to go to scholarly literature for those but there are many articles.  Finally a PM(I)S is well defined in the PMBOK and in our textbook.  It includes processes, roles and responsibilities, and computer applications for project management processes.  The definition you find and the technical component is what you should focus on.
