Care Creswell Chapter 5: Introducton

Opening Sentence/Narratie Hook

Introduction – Opening Sentence (Narrative Hook)

• In Terenzini and colleagues’ (2001) article, the frst sentence accomplishes both primary objectives for an introduction:

• (a) piquing interest in the study and • (b) conveying a distinct research problem or issue.

• What efect did this sentence have? • Would it entice a reader to read on? • Was it pitched at a level so that a wide audience could understand it?

• These questions are important for opening sentences, and they are called a narrative hook, a term drawn from English composition, meaning words that serve to draw, engage, or hook the reader into the study (Creswell p.108, 109).

Narrative Hook

• Write an opening sentence that will stmulate reader interest as well as coniey an issue to which a broad audience can relate.

• As a general rule, refrain from using quotatons—especially long ones—in the lead sentence because it will be difcult for readers to grasp the key idea you would like for them to see. Quotatons raise many possibilites for interpretaton and thus create unclear beginnings. Howeier, as is eiident in some qualitatie studies, quotatons can create reader interest.

• Stay away from idiomatc expressions or trite phrases (e.g., “The lecture method remains a ‘sacred cow’ among most college and uniiersity instructors.”).

• Consider numeric informaton for impact (e.g., “Eiery year, an estmated 5 million Americans experience the death of an immediate family member.”).

• Clearly identfy the research problem (i.e., dilemma, issue) leading to the study. Ask yourself, “Is there a specifc sentence (or sentences) in which I coniey the research problem?”

• Indicate why the problem is important by citng numerous references that justfy the need to study the problem. In perhaps a less than joking manner, we say to our students that if they do not haie a dozen references cited on the frst page of their proposal, they do not haie a scholarly study.

• Make sure that the problem is framed in a manner consistent with the approach to research in the study (e.g., exploratory in qualitatie, examining relatonships or predictors in quanttatie, and either approach in mixed methods inquiry).

Narrative Hook

• “The transsexual and ethno methodological celebrity Agnes changed her identty nearly three years before undergoing sex reassignment surgery.” (Cahill, 1989, p. 281)

• “Who controls the process of chief executie succession?” (Boeker, 1992, p. 400)

• “There is a large body of literature that studies the cartographic line (a recent summary artcle is Bute in feld, 1985), and generalizaton of cartographic lines (McMaster, 1987).” (Carstensen, 1989, p. 181)

Narrative Hook

• Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America and disproportionately afects African Americans; the lack of access and afordability of healthcare in African American communities inhibits preventable diseases from being diagnosed or treated early.

Narrative Hook

• Maternal mortality is defined as the death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period, regardless of the cause of mortality (including accidental or incidental causes). Maternal fatalities are further classified depending on the underlying cause of death, which includes direct and indirect causes, as well as the timing of death, which includes late maternal deaths.

Narrative Hook

• Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women.

Narrative Hook

• Mental health awareness is critical for all instructors, who are frequently the first line of protection for their students. Educational leaders have highlighted the effect that a student's mental health has on educational success, and they acknowledge that there is much that could be done to assist students who are suffering from mental health issues.

• In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that in 2019, 4.7% of adults aged 18 years or older reported regular feelings of depression, and 11.2% reported regular feelings of worry, nervousness, or anxiety.
