FULL TEXT Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN) News Release

U.S. House of Representatives Documents

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Andre Carson (D-IN) recognized Equal Pay Day, and renewed his call to

close the pay gap between women and men.

"The average woman in the United States earns 20 cents less on the dollar than the average man. In Indiana, which

ranks 46th in the country, women make even less," said Congressman Andre Carson. "Recent research shows that

even when factors like professional specialization, hours worked, and educational and experience levels are the

same, women still earn less than men. At the rate we're going it will be another 50 years before we eliminate the

gender pay gap. We cannot afford to wait that long. We need equal pay for equal work!"

Equal Pay Day is held in early April because it symbolizes when - more than four months into 2018 - women's

wages finally catch up with what men were paid in 2017. Nationally, women working full-time, year-round jobs

continue to earn about 80 cents for every dollar earned by men.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would provide several remedies to women who are not getting equal pay for equal

work. It would guarantee that women can challenge pay discrimination and hold employers accountable.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would bolster the Equal Pay Act of 1963 by holding employers accountable for

discriminatory practices, ending the practice of pay secrecy, easing workers' ability to individually or jointly

challenge pay discrimination and strengthening available remedies for wronged employees.

Congressman Carson joined Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) in cosponsoring the legislation in the House,

and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) introduced a companion bill in the Senate.
