Informative Speech(700 words)
Guidelines for Speech #2
Informative Speech
Purpose:
This informative speech will give you the opportunity to present information to your audience in a clear, organized manner. In addition, you will enhance your speech with outside support for your ideas. Outside support will not only add information but also will enhance your credibility as a speaker, especially if it is carefully chosen.
Occasions for the informative speech arise on the lecture platform, at business meetings, in classrooms—in fact, wherever you find reports being made, instructions given, or ideas being presented by means of lectures and discussions, this is an informative speech.
Description:
There are several information areas you might want to consider for your speech. These include: (a) political, economic, social, or technological issues, (b) historical events or forces, (c) theories, principles, or laws, (d) definitions of words, thoughts, or concepts.
Guidelines:
1. This speech should be between 4 and 5 minutes in length.
2. You should deliver the speech extemporaneously.
3. You will be allowed to use note cards but do not rely on your notes. Use them as reminders of main ideas and citation details. Your speech may not be written out and the note cards should contain an outline only. Too much reliance on notes will result in a reduced grade.
4. Practice your delivery by using your webcam as your focal point of your audience.
5. Use at least three outside sources as support for your speech using oral citations. You might say, “According to the May 12, 1999 issue of the Wall Street Journal. . .”
6. Use at least one visual form of support. Make sure that your visual aids serve the purpose of your speech by helping your listeners process and retain information. PowerPoint must be employed with this speech.
7. Your speech should have an identifiable introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction should compel the audience to listen. The body should contain at least two or three main points organized in a way that helps the audience understand the message. The conclusion should include a brief summary of the main points and a closing statement that leave the audience thinking about the message.
8. Prepare a typed outline before you present your speech. Please include a complete, full sentence outline of the body of your speech. Include your main ideas and subordinate ideas in appropriate outline form. (Label or highlight source citations in a different color ink.) Use the sample bibliography guide in this packet to help you with format.
9. Prepare a separate page of MLA format references.
10. Look over grading critique sheet and outline sheet for specific grading criteria.
