Instructor’s Guidance Hints and Tips
Welcome to Week Two This week is all about using technology to provide motivation for student learning. You will also learn how games can be used to enhance learning if integrated correctly into the lesson plans.
When I taught math in middle school, I used several programs that helped to enhance the math skills for the students. When I taught substance abuse prevention, I had a multi-student computer simulation game about drinking. The premise was that the students were at a party. They could choose an alcoholic or non-alcohol drink and how many they would drink each hour. Then, they would choose if they wanted to eat a snack or not. This information was programmed in, and then the students played an eye-hand coordination game. The game simulated the effects of the alcohol and/or food consumption. Students who thought they would excel at the game, found out how terrible they were if intoxicated. If the students drank too much without food, they would pass out, be taken to the hospital, and possibly die, which ended the game.
Assignment 1 – Student Motivation and Technology (Due by the end of Day 3 - Thursday) Some things that you should remember about this assignment include:
1. Read the assigned articles. 2. Access the provided website. 3. Conduct a search using the provided key words. 4. Select an appropriate video that enables you to complete this discussion. 5. If for any reason you are unable to use a video, contact me immediately for an alternate
assignment. 6. Include the link to the video, along with a complete reference listing and citations
showing its use. 7. Be sure to answer the three discussion prompts completely. 8. Complete this assignment using a Word document. Save, copy, and paste it to the
message box of the discussion forum. This will allow you to ensure that your work is grammatically correct prior to posting. It will also allow you to have a copy of your work in the event of a technical issue when submitting your assignment.
9. Remember to respond to at least two classmates before the end of Week 2 on Monday. I will be looking for your researched analysis for the topic of student motivation and technology. I will be looking for the supportive evidence of this research, specifically proper citations and references. You should use all required resources to support your information. Use of any extra resources would also be welcome, but not required. Finally, I will be looking for your substantive responses to at least two classmates.
***** Remember to include any citations and references. Also, remember to use correct APA formatting for your references and citations.
Assignment 2 – Games in the Classroom – Written Assignment (Due by the end of Day 7 - Monday)
Gamification enables you to individualize instruction, as well as differentiate it. Some things that you should remember about this assignment include:
1. Read and follow my suggestions posted in the “Written Assignment” Announcement, posted during Week 1.
2. Use the Grading Rubric Checklist posted in the Announcement section. Include the required number of pages and references.
3. Use the template provided within the class instructions or the one I posted in the Announcement section.
4. Watch the required video and conduct additional research. 5. Using the required resources for this week, and any others you may find in your research,
answer the four bullet points for this assignment. 6. For an APA paper, be sure to include a title page, introduction, body of paper,
conclusion, and reference page. Follow the APA Guidelines and/or APA information found in the UAGC Writing Center. You may use the provided template, found in the announcement area or the one I posted in the Announcements.
7. Complete this assignment using a Word document. Save it so that you will have a copy of your work in the event of a technical issue when submitting your assignment.
8. Proofread your paper to ensure that your work is grammatically correct. 9. Upload it to your Waypoint dropbox.
I will be looking for your researched analysis for the four main areas of discussion regarding games in the classroom. I will be looking for the supportive evidence of this research,
specifically proper citations and references. You should use all required resources to support your information. Use of any extra resources would also be welcome, but not required. All areas of the rubric should be covered in your submission.
Remember to include any citations and references, if used. Also, remember to use correct APA formatting for your references and citations.
Grading Criteria
I will be using the Grading Rubric that you will find posted within the assignment link. The following Grading Rubric contains the same criterion but provides you with an expanded view of the requirements for the contents of the paper. You can use this as a checklist to ensure that you have included everything required within your assignment.
Games in the Classroom 9 points possible Format Criteria Completed Your paper must include the following components:
• Title page • Introduction – brief lead-in overview • Gamification Influences • Gamification and Motivation • Differential Support • Technologies • Conclusion – brief summary • References
