INSTRUCTIONSFOR GPG EXERCISE PROJECT

(Note: The User ID and password for login into to the Workspace are your UMUC

credentials. (If you are actively logged into a class room, you may not be prompted to enter

these credentials.)

• Download (or get from the classroom webpage) and open the gpg4win-compendium-en- 3.0.0.pdf document from the “GPG in DaaS” folder. (You may read pages 1-40. But the

actual steps to follow are from p. 41 onward in this document.)

• Certificate Creation & Exporting and Importing Public Certificate

o Follow the steps to create the certificates from page 42 onward.

o Remember the passphrase. It is important not to lose it. I have no power to recover it,

You may email it to yourself. Make a backup of the key pair

o (Skip Section 7.2.)

o Go to section 7.3 (page 56) follow the steps to publish the certificate o The certificate will appear in Kleopatra. o Highlight the certificate and click on Export Certificate in the title bar. Follow the

instruction to export. Check the box that says ASCII armor.

o Post your public certificate/key onto the conference forum as an ASCII attachment. o Download the public key of the designated student in your group. Make sure it is from

your fellow student in your group. If you have problem with it you may download some

other student’s public certificate. However, make sure that student agrees to help by

deciphering the encrypted text that you will send.

o Import the fellow student’s public certificate in Kleopatra by clicking on the “Import Certificate” in the title bar.

ENCRYPTING a file

• Create a text file in notebook. The file should be minimum 50-word file.

• Pull down menu from File in Kleopatra and click on sign/encrypt files. A dialog box will open highlight the file you want encrypt. It will ask you for whom you want to encrypt.

Highlight the fellow student’s public key and press ENTER. The encrypted file will be

stored on the desktop with gpg extension.

• Send that file as an email attachment to fellow student whose public key you used to encrypt the file.

DECRYPTING THE MESSAGE

• When you receive an encrypted message as an attachment. Download it and save it on the desktop

• Right click on the encrypted message file.

• Click on decrypt and verify. The decrypted message file will be created and stored on the desktop

• Send the decrypted file to the sender of the public key

• Verify the decrypted file and let the sender know whether the decryption is right or wrong

CREATE THE GPG REPORT.

Create the report with the following sections preferably in a table. Make sure to include dates

and your good or bad experience. Include dates
