Part 2: Analysis of Literature
Introduction
The population of citizens in the United States who are aged 65 years or older are referred to as the geriatric population. The population, as indicated by their age, there is a high need to investigate matters affecting the population, especially those issues which are related to their health issues and conditions. The aging population in society is faced with a wide variety of challenges that influence and affect their routine and daily lives. The aging population is faced with challenges due to the wear and tear of the body tissues and organs. Therefore, it is difficult for their bodies and systems to perform the required and necessary functions.
Consequently, it is crucial to devise ways and strategies to employ to help the aging population become less prone to diseases and other body and system complications. The Conservative physical therapy approach is aimed at reducing the pain, avoiding complications, reducing cost, improving level of function and improving quality of life. Injury level of the aged population since their rate of recovery and the impact of the management of physical therapy should be in a position of reducing, controlling, and managing the pain and symptoms which the aged individual in the society may be facing—the central aspect of physical therapy in treating pain and other related conditions in a non-surgical method. Exercise is a important part and strategy to control/reduce pain, improve strength, activity tolerance/endurance, functionality, and safety. Basic fundamental’s of physical therapy is a great approach that can be used to improve overall function of a aging population, especially ones that live a sedentary lifestyle.
Conservative Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is made up of professionals who are majorly involved in treating conditions and handling issues affecting older adults in society. There are special and unique health challenges that affect the aging population, which require special attention, management, and care to enhance the aged population's compelling performance. The aged have a challenge of having experienced various and different types of health and body challenges. Thus, it is essential to handle them with care and develop a plan of care with a patient centered approach to increase safety. A big factor in physical therapy is educating the patient as well. Therefore, it is the role and function who is specialized in handling the age to manage and control their conditions. Some various advantages and disadvantages are associated with the delivery of services, especially to the aged population.
Advantages of Conservative Therapy
A healthy population is considered to be a productive population. The majority of the aged population who are 65 years and above live in conditions and backgrounds in which they cannot manage to raise the cost of the various medical challenges. The aged are experienced with a couple of challenges while at the same time offering an opportunity to the individuals and professions in the Physical Therapy profession to cater and apply their knowledge and skills in the management and control of the challenges affecting the aged population.
One of the significant benefits of conservative therapy is the care and attention accorded to the aging population, special and unique, and affordable. The cost is the main advantage since the population may not have any of their close family members to look after them when they become 65 or older. Financially, physical therapy can save thousands of dollars in preventing complication and progression of conditions.
The aging population is experienced with conditions some of which are chronic due to wear and tear, previous injuries, weakness, and decrease functional ability. The majority of chronic diseases/conditions require professionals trained in such a specific area and hence need professional skills to attend to the aged. Rehabilitation of the aged individuals in the hospitals, home health setting, outpatient setting, inpatient settings and nursing homes ensures the better services, thus enhancing better treatment and management process. It is important that medical doctors recommend rehabilitation for most conditions rather than referring to pain management or Orthopedics as they will only look to medicate and perform surgeries. The goal-setting idea of the health sector is essential in achieving a better and performing health sector.
The expansive or the extension of life is considered to be possible under good healthcare services. The extended life expectancy has a positive impact on the country's economic growth and the economy at large. The economic growth, which is contributed by the activities performed by a healthy population, positively impacts conservative therapy since the development in the medical sector leads to result in the economy as resources revolve around the sectors to promote better life expectancy.
