CON 317 Group Assignment 2: INTERVENTION DESCRIPTION

Income status and health condition has a very mysterious connection. The higher the income, the more opportunities people have to access to some good housing environment and live a more ideal and healthier life. Therefore, the people who have higher income tend to be heathier. Conversely, people with lower incomes are more likely to live in areas with unhealthy environments and have poor eating habits. Laudan Aron (2015) has mentioned that the higher income groups are healthier, the lower income groups are less healthy. What's more, people with lower income do not have some good adjustment or ability to deal with the pressure when facing some stressful environment. If there is no good a way to deal with some of their own stress, or the elimination of external pressure, the pressure is likely to bite back a person's body, let his health has a significant negative impact. This is one of the reasons the poorer people are more likely to be unhealthy. Compared with people with low incomes, people with high incomes have a better skill to deal with stress and totally control their lives. How to make low-income people have good anti-pressure ability and learn better ways to relieve pressure will be the key to improve the health problems of low-income people.

The main objective here is to teach and educate the low-income groups to know how to cope with the stressful situation better and deal with their own stress. By teaching them the new method of dealing with stress, the low-income groups are more likely to be healthier than before. One indicator for checking the situation will be the questionnaire held by the statistics Canada General Social Survey. If the education is useful, the percentage of low-income group reporting excellent or very good health will increase. The federal, provincial and territorial advisory committee on population health (1991) mentioned that less than 50% of the low-income groups report that they are excellent or very good health. The target group will be the people who were born before 1978. Meghan (2017) mentioned that the millennials are much more health-conscious than other generation, therefore, it will be less useful to teach young generation about coping with the stress. People in their 40s will be the best target who are less health-conscious and usually have stress and pressure from many different angles.

The main goal of this activity is to teach low-income people aged between 40 and 50 how to relieve their stress and pressure, so as to achieve mental and physical health. The event will be in the form of a public lecture by a professional psychologists and therapists who will be sharing the knowledge of how to cope with stress. At the end of the lecture, there will be a separate interview session to directly alleviate some people’s psychological pressure. The lectures will begin in one state, say Victoria, and then spread throughout Canada. In order to carry out this activity smoothly, there will be many requirements in terms of publicity and location. First, the advertisement of the lecture must be able to enter the target group's line of sight. Cooperating with companies to get top management to promote the lecture to their employees would be effective. In addition, public lecture publicity through some consultation center for adults is also a way to directly interact with the target group. In terms of the location, in order to ensure that enough people can attend the lecture, and there are enough small rooms to conduct individual interviews, the university will be the first choice for this activity. Universities not only have large lecture halls, but also can divide the classrooms into small independent rooms to ensure the privacy of individual interviews. In the end, the event must also please enough psychological doctors and therapists.

Finding qualified psychologists, as well as therapists, will be a huge challenge for the technology part. According to the COAT (Canadian association of occupational therapists) and Canadian psychological association’ homepage, these two sites have the best access to the best psychologists and therapists. By getting the cooperation with such groups, the teacher problem and the lecture problem should be done. For the financial part, the people who should pay for hiring such psychologists and therapists could be the public health agency of Canada. According to the homepage of Public health Agency of Canada, the homepage claims that the group is to promote the population health and to promote the knowledge of the health. Besides the teacher and financial problem, the event also needs the permission of using the classroom from the university. The event can use the university of Victoria as an event location, since it is famous and also has many classrooms. The event also needs some volunteers to keep the event going smoothly. The volunteers could be the university students and could be the social workers in the society.

The stakeholders in this event could vary much. The people who actually give the lecture will be the psychologists and therapists from COAT and Canadian psychological association. The people who hold the event are the university students and the social workers. The people who are paying for the location and the psychologists are the agency of the government, the public health agency of Canada. The people who come to the event will obviously directly receive the benefits from the event. What’s more, the family and the people around them will also receive the indirect benefits from the event, since the low-income groups with better skills to deal with the stress will be mental and physical healthier than before and the family can pay less attention to them. The geographic area could be all of the Victoria, depending on how many people come to the event.
