My name is Edwin Villa Rivera naturally from Ponce Puerto Rico and I serve under the US ARMY as a Geospatial Engineer or Analyst. I have been in the service for over 10 years now with 2 deployments to combat under my belt. Schofield Barracks HI as my first duty station, Fort Gordon GA, Camp Humphreys South Korea and currently in England. I have been dealing with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) since I joined the military. I cannot say I understand all functionalities completely since is a very complex system but I hope this course will help me discover things with unprecedented value.
An information system is a group of components dedicated to store, collect, process, facilitate information or knowledge and provide digital products as a result of some sort of analysis. Some of the characteristics of an information system is that it helps to produce more accurate and instant analysis utilizing the data collected for a specific purpose.
The term application means that is something user directed and it can be applied for specific purposes for example Google Maps, Word, Excel etc. In other words an application is a software that runs in your computer or any device that has a processor. A computer-based information system is that integration between hardware and software that helps you complete or accomplish a designated task for example a Microsoft PC with Windows 10 or an Apple Computer with IOS 10.

The information system that I used on the daily basis for work and missions is GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to display, analyze and interpret data. I also utilize the library here on campus to conduct research for the different assignments.
Some of the characteristics of this systems is that they process huge amount of data. If we address geospatial data itself, the amount and size of the files combined in a geodatabase, are enormous and it goes the same with libraries. Is amazing how quick this systems can process, analyze and store data in a fashionable amount of time and these days, time is a big playing factor in management.
For this course I will choose the GIS system so that I can better understand and comprehend functionalities and potential use in a business environment.
