FINAL SELF EVALUATION

Note: Please upload your Final Self Evaluation on or before the due date (12/11). No late submissions will be accepted!!

STEP #1: Your Personal Learning Plan

I'd like you to go back and re-examine your Personal Learning Plan developed at the beginning of this quarter.

In this class, we had nine course goals. For each course goal, you created a goal for yourself in this class.

In this part of your final self-evaluation, I would like you to write a paragraph in response to each of the nine course goals.

In your response, you will need to include:

1) how well you did in achieving your goal (for example: just got started on it, developed a pretty good grasp of it, or felt like I became quite proficient at it), and

2) evidence of your achievements. In other words, support your writing with something concrete (for example, “I became more confident every week in expressing my cultural values in this class as the quarter went on because I had developed trust with my classmates. My instructor’s comments supported this growth.”)

Here’s SAMPLE formatting example from a former student (from a different class with different course goals):

COURSE GOAL #1: Engage critically and constructively in the exchange of diverse ideas, being open to learning new perspectives and ideas.

Personal Learning Goal #1: I will be able to articulate ways and offer examples to explain how language determines cultural patterns of thinking and behavior.

Beginning-of-the Quarter Personal Goal: The importance of me taking this course is to better my communication and interaction skills for my future career as a nurse, where I will be coming in contact with many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. I will need to learn how to be open minded to the many religious and cultural practices and perspective of people in different situations.

End-of-Quarter Self-Assessment: In the beginning of quarter, my number one goal was to learn how to be a better communicator and better my interacting skills in order to help my patients from different backgrounds and culture. I cannot say that I fully achieved this goal, but I am improving. I take care of people from different countries, cultures, age group, sexual orientation and economic status. I try to provide my best service to everyone. If I have patients who are from different countries and does not speak English, I always make sure I use an interpreter and also ask the family as many questions as I can to make sure that the patient is comfortable. I also assure the family that their family member is in good hands. I educate them all about the available services we have to make them feel that we are with them. I feel very comfortable talking to people from different cultures and ask them questions about their culture and religious practices to serve them better.

Make sure you have completed all nine course goals with your end-of-quarter assessment before moving on to Step 2!

STEP # 2: Engagement in the class (up to separate 25 points)

These points will be recorded and will become part of your overall grade point in this class.

This next part of your final self-assessment asks you to measure your level of engagement in the class. As I shared with you at the beginning of the quarter, your engagement in this class is the central ingredient to our class being successful. If you’re not fully engaged in this class, then you can’t truly learn the material since we work together as a diverse learning community to acquire new knowledge, co-construct meaning and build new skills.

Write two paragraphs about your level of engagement in the class. Engagement can include some of the following aspects below, but I would also like you to write about what being truly engaged meant to you this quarter.

After writing your two paragraphs, I’d like you to score yourself using the five criteria below:

I was prepared each week (have completed the week’s assignments) and ready to engage in discussions with a culturally diverse group of people. ___/5

I was beginning to apply the knowledge and skills I learned in the class to my life outside of class. ___/5

I was open to learn from others. ___/5

I shared my ideas with others which helped contribute to each conversation. I asked. I was curious and honest. ___/5

I was willing to be changed by this learning experience. ___/5

TOTAL POINTS ______/25

STEP #3: Focus on Assignments

Choose one of our assignments or activities to write about: for example, your 1st cultural interview(I put this one in another file) , your 2nd paper on social memberships, a specific video, a particular weekly discussion, etc. Write at least two paragraphs about this assignment or activity in terms of its value to you and how it helped you develop new understanding about the challenges and complexities in becoming an effective multicultural communicator. Include a response to the following in your answers:

Write about what you discovered about yourself that was new?

What new communication skills or knowledge did you learn that surprised you? What was your greatest challenge?

How did this particular assignment or activity help you improve as a communicator?

What was the most important insight you received because of this assignment or activity?

STEP #4: The Importance of Listening

Retake the Listening Quiz and write at least one paragraph on any changes in your score. What did you learn about being a good listener that you think increases your effectiveness as a multicultural communicator?

NOTE: If you did not submit the listening survey at the beginning of the quarter, please complete it as part of your final self-evaluation. Write about what you learned about yourself as a listener throughout the quarter and through scoring yourself on this survey.

STEP #5: Scoring your progress using the Cultural Competency Rubric.

I asked you at the beginning of the quarter to score yourself based on your level of competency as a multicultural communicator using the Cultural Competency rubric included in this week’s Canvas. Now I would like you to score yourself again at the end of the quarter.

Knowledge

Cultural Self Awareness (1-4 with 4 being the highest level of competency)

Knowledge of cultural worldview frameworks (1-4 with 4 being the highest level of competency)

Skills

Empathy (1-4 with 4 being the highest level of competency)

Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication (1-4 with 4 being the highest level of competency)

Attitudes

Openness (1-4 with 4 being the highest level of competency)

Curiosity (1-4 with 4 being the highest level of competency)

Beginning of the quarter: ____/24

End of the quarter: ____/24

Write a minimum of one paragraph about your end-of-the-quarter skills, knowledge and attitudes. Of the six areas above, which one did you most improve your score? Why? What did you learn that changed your points?

STEP #6: Final Grade

After reviewing your participation in this class and the points you received on your assignments (please - check the gradebook in Canvas), what grade do you believe best represents the quality of your work? Does it match your grade in Canvas? If not, why not?

From Your Instructor:

Once the quarter has ended, I will look at the whole composite of your learning, the points you received throughout the quarter, and assign a final grade. I divide your percentage points into a 4.0 grading scale to determine your final grade.

Thank you for your participation in this course.

By engaging in this particular learning experience about developing more effective multicultural communication skills and knowledge, I believe you will make a difference in our wonderfully diverse world!
