INTRODUCTION
Project investigating the application of light gauge steel in construction sectors.
Construction industry are accelerating a change from the traditional, on-site construction approach to Offsite pre-fabrication (Malik, Ahmad and Al-Hussein, 2019).
Light gauge steel is commonly used in residential dwellings or apartments roof structures in Australia, replacing conventional timber trusses.
3
AIM OBJECTIVES
Extending the use of light gauge steel in construction
Determine the application pattern by country or continent
Identifying opportunities and barriers for applying Light gauge steel in countries where there is low or no use
Analyse the best practices for using light gauge steel application in construction.
LIGHT GAUGE STEEL- BENEFITS & BARRIERS
Benefits
Light weight and Durable
Higher strength allows greater spacing between members.
Saving in cost, material, time & manpower
It does not rot, shrink, warp, or decompose like wood structures
Barriers
Allows the passage of sound
Lose strength in the advent of fire
Skilled labor and supervision is required

PREFABRICATION OF LIGHT GAUGE STEEL
Malik, Ahmad and Al-Hussein (2019)
Combination of good design with modern high-performance components and quality-controlled manufacturing procedures.
Increases the quality of the final product, labor safety, and project deliverability.
Prefabricated construction provides superior quality product as well as improved productivity and sustainability.
The study reports an 86% increase in prefabrication and preassembly over the past 15 years

PROTECTION OF LIGHT GAUGE STEEL
Protection from corrosion
Way, Ola, biddle and Lawson (2009)
Corrosion occurs on surface of bare carbon steel .
The standard form of corrosion protection for cold-formed steel sections is the continuous hot-dip zinc coating.
Another method is Galvanization, used usually with a standard Z275 coating.
Zinc - Aluminium coatings are commonly using in Australia.
Protection from fire
Durability of Light Steel Construction (2014)
Clad the steel with fire rated sheeting or drywall.
Provided by one or two layers of plasterboard.
Gypsum-based boards ,cement particle board and magnesium silicate boards are using for fire protection.

1. High strength-to-weight ratio
2. Panelization
3. Lower insurance rates
4. No mandated site security
LIGHT GAUGE STEEL IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES
USA
(Light Gauge Steel Framing Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report 2021 - 2028, 2021)
Expected combined annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.6 percent from 2021 to 2028
Product adoption is expected to increase over the next eight years.
Market size was US $ 33.89 billion in 2020
LIGHT GAUGE STEEL IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES (Contd.)
Canada
(Light Gauge Steel Framing Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report 2021 - 2028, 2021)
Steel stud frames – used in 40% of commercial structures in Canada.
Structured cold-formed steel (CFS) frames -High-wind and seismic zones
Light gauge steel studs framing - provides a very sustainable construction method.
Russia (Light gauge low in use)
Difficult to adopt in Russia due to the traditional attitude of the construction industry.
Russia still deals with is logistics.
Transportation costs having a huge impact
Sustainability benefits of Light gauge steel (Lawson, 2021)
High Levels of thermal insulation.
Foundation loads are reduced by more than 70% than concrete and blockwork.
Prefabricated materials - Eliminates site waste
The carbon of the building fabric will reduce by up to 20%.
Modifications and extensions are easy.
Light weight and speed of installation.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Analyse the competition of Light gauge steel industry using Michael Porter’s five forces factors: threat of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers, threat of substitute products or services and rivalry among existing competitors
Collaborate with other construction organisations in other countries like Canada and Russia.
Conduct awareness programme to push the benefits of light gauge steel in other countries especially where there is low involvement of light gauge steel in construction project.
Partner with suppliers, cladding and prefabrication organisations of light gauge steel in other countries.
CONCLUSION
In terms of completion, expense, efficiency, productivity and sustainability light gauge steel is advantageous to construction projects.
Light gauge steel durability can be maintained by adopting proper protection methods.
Cold-formed steel framing can lower total construction costs.
Light gauge steel application in construction expected to gain a high demand in residential construction projects in near future.
Due to traditional attitude and lack of awareness, many countries refrained themselves form adopting light gauge steel in construction.
