Intro:

“One city nine town” is the program that which aimed to decentralize the city by building nine unique satellite towns modeled after cities from other countries. With the aid of international architects. Major concern: if the program succeeded?

It is not our aim for this class to judge whether the project is successful or not, nor can we easily give the answer--success in which aspect? Try to avoid general and simplified categories like good and bad. Rather, you can explore the prime goal of the project? Why had it chosen this way of development? Before you ask more questions, think about why you choose this project and what kind of “Asianness” it demonstrates. Any of the discourses we covered in the class inspired you? Try to analyze the historical and urban context of the “one city nine town” and the socio-cultural phenomena it has generated. What have other authors said or criticized about the project? Do you agree? Think about your thesis first. What topic are you interested in and wanted to discuss through analyzing this project? For example, does it mean that the typical US model of suburb won’t work for a megacity like Shanghai? What’s the difference?

This is an interesting observation, you can ask further what does it mean that the suburban new town development is comparable--in its appearance--to a theme park. You can refer to literatures that talk about the disneyfication phenomena.
