Overview

EXERCISE

How will you help?

Some former users and media makers have turned on TikTok after it was accused it of sharing user data with the Chinese government. ByteDance has taken a few hasty steps, like setting up a transparency center and hiring Roland Coutier. But these actions appear to be kneejerk efforts, born of the desire to just “Do something – Now!!”

They’ve hired you as a C-Suite advisor to help shape a thoughtful, proactive corporate response and communications strategy.

As you work take these factors into consideration:

1. The stormy history of Sino-American relations, particularly now.

2. Growing concern - even anger - by Americans about data privacy invasion generally speaking

You’ll write a 750- to 1000-word analysis and action plan base on this case including a:

· Short “executive summary” of the case, use the course’s case study evaluation tool to explain the issues to your colleagues.

· Describe your suggested action plan, using the PRSA values to persuade your colleagues to adopt your ideas.

· While this may not be an area of personal expertise you are a student of ethics and communication; coalesce your ideas into a logical strategy

· Plan a communication strategy to ensure that you’re not only good, but that you’re telling people that you’re doing good.

Focus on the use earned media, though you may comment on other ways to communicate.

· Describe your strategy and objectives.

· Who are your key audiences?

· Include a targeted media list and relevant US governmental officials in an appendix

· How will you persuade each of these audiences? Describe your approach to this problem and, based on that, a messaging strategy.

· Include a messaging strategy in an appendix, which will tie message to audience and include a statement, key messages, and social media content. Explain what visuals you will use.

· What’s your end game? Describe your goal as well as objectives.

. Writing/formatting notes

· Format your document like this: single-spaced, one-inch borders, 12-point, Arial font, left justified.

· Submit your case study in class website. Include the following information on your document: the words per sentence (which should be 15 words or fewer) and the passive voice rate (which should be around zero percent). This information can be found via your word-processing system’s readability statistics function.”
