Final Project Communication 118, introduction to interpersonal communication and culture
Final Paper Workshop 3
DUE: 8/6 → NOTE: FINAL PAPER WORKSHOP 4 IS ALSO DUE THIS DATE!!!!!
Get your 30 second recording of naturally occurring talk (final paper workshop 2)!
1. Make sure you can play your recording at a slower pace in order to add more detail
Youtube videos and many phones offer you the opportunity to slow the sound down. If necessary, you can use the opensource program “audacity”.
2. Use the Conversation Analysis transcription system
See document 3 in the folder on your finals!
You could also take a look at lecture 20.
3. Make sure to check your transcription afterwards on normal speed
Slowing down the sound sometimes deforms sounds. Make sure it is accurate! Moreover, you should be able to read out your transcript such that it sounds close to the original
4. Just a last note
Transcripts are never your data! They represent it to aide your work. If you make claims, make sure you check back on your recording.
This assignment is worth 3 points. You are graded on your precision: is this a fair representation of the 30 seconds of data you gathered? Thus, don’t add too much detail, but make sure all the obvious pauses, intonations, tempos etc. are present in your transcript.
· I need to receive your transcript through turnitin and your recording through email ( mreijven@umass.edu )
You will need to upload your transcript to receive further feedback from your peers with regards to what is going on in there! → use that for final paper workshop 4!
