Final Paper Workshop 2

DUE: 7/30

1. Decide on a context where you want to record communication for your study

Explain which question/concept seems to be most promising to you for pursuing a small research project and explain why this context is a good place for this phenomenon. For example, you record in a lecture hall because you are interested in differences in posing questions between students and teachers.

You can also do this the other way around: tell me what kind of context is interesting and explain what kind of communication might be of interest to you in this context.

2. Record 30 seconds of interaction

Just use your phone, or any other device, to record some naturally occurring talk. If you can find a suitable youtube video, that is fine as well, as long as it was not staged for the video (i.e. it was not designed to be put on youtube, it would occur without recording as well). If you are unsure, email me!

3. Add some participant observation on the setting you recorded

Offer a thick description of the 30 seconds you have recorded.

4. Identify membership categorizations

List some words (4 to 5) which link to identities people use in the interaction you have studied.

This assignment is optional, but may help you to stay on track for writing your final paper. If you finalize it before the deadline, I can give you feedback on your progress.

· Moreover, you will need to do parts of this for Final Paper Workshop 3, which is graded, and thus, doing this workshop may help you to stay on track for the course!
