ENVSCI 122 Final Group Project Spring 2019
Purpose of the project: This project is intended to encourage you to think about environmental issues and develop potential solutions to those issues. As part of this, you will explore who is impacted by the situation, what laws or regulations are relevant, and what types of strategies might provide appropriate solutions. You will describe your findings in (1) a group paper, and (2) a group in-class presentation. The specifics for each deliverable are listed below.
Instructions for the Paper Papers should be approximately 8-12 pages in length, 12 pt font, 1 inch margins, double-spaced. With your group, select one of four scenarios (see below) and address the following for the scenario you chose.
• Identify and describe two potential environmental issues in the scenario. [[Each issue is worth 6 points each – total = 12 points]]
• Identify and describe two relevant laws/regulations related to EACH issue (for a total of 4 laws/regulations ). For each law/regulation:
o What does it do? o Is it municipal, state, regional, federal, international? o How is it implemented and who (e.g., what agency, etc.) implements it?
[[Each description of the (4) laws/regulations is worth 6 points – total = 24 points]]
• Describe one management strategy you would recommend to address each environmental issue. For each management strategy, include the following details:
o How does it address the environmental issue? o How would you implement it? (For example, would you create a new department to
implement it? Would you create a new law?) o What resources would you need (e.g., funds, staff)? o What challenges, if any, exist with regard to implementing your proposed management
strategy? o How would you evaluate its success?
[[Each strategy worth 12 points – total =24]] • Identify and describe two potential stakeholders or stakeholder groups for each management
strategy you identified. Why do you consider them stakeholders (i.e., what is their connection to the issue or the solution)? [[Worth a total of 10 points]]
• Include at least four references in your paper, using the APA citation format. Wikipedia does not count as a reference! [Worth a total of 5 points]].
Instructions for the Powerpoint Presentation: The Powerpoint presentation should be 5 minutes. (If you do not have access to Powerpoint, please let me know) Using the information from your paper, develop a presentation highlighting ONE issue and related management strategy. More specifically, tell us which scenario you selected and then tell us the following information:
o What is an environmental issue for your scenario?
o What strategy did you develop to address that issue? o How does the strategy address the environmental issue? o How would you implement the strategy? o What challenges, if any, exist with regard to implementing your proposed management
strategy?
The presentation is worth 25 points (15 points on how clearly the information is conveyed in the PowerPoint, 10 points on presentation style in class).
Scenarios (Pick one) 1. Mooring field expansion: Due to a recent increase in boating activity, a town on the south shore
of Massachusetts is looking to expand its mooring field, with the hopes of adding 50 new moorings.
2. Corporate carbon footprint: A beverage company with offices in the U.S., Mexico, and Spain is interested in taking measures to reduce its carbon footprint.
3. Turtle protection efforts: An international organization was just funded to develop a program that would protect endangered turtles and their habitats.
4. Offshore wind development project: An offshore wind company is trying to identify the appropriate location and scale of an offshore wind project in federal waters off the coast of Massachusetts.
A note about the scenarios: They are intentionally vague. You are welcome to do some additional interpretation in order to identify your issue. For example, if you select scenario #2, you can decide that this is a company that specializes in coffee, and you could explore some element of coffee production as it relates to carbon footprints. Or you could specify the type of beverage packaging and how that impacts the carbon footprint. Feel free to use these scenarios as an opportunity to research real-world examples.
Due dates Due APRIL 4th Submit, via Blackboard, a brief (half a page) document articulating:
