Fiesta 1980 and Daddy
“Fiesta 1980” and “Daddy” are both poems which explains about the memories of their father. Conversely the experiences are totally different since the children shown in “Fiesta 1980” by Junot Diaz shows clear that the children suffer but there is a chance to improve the affiliation whereas in “Daddy” there is not confidence due to the fact that their dad is dead. The two poems explain the same suffering of internal struggle because of their father. Therefore this essay is going to explain more about the plot summary of the two works, similarities and differences between the two poems.
According to (Miranda 2), the poem Fiesta 1980”, the story is narrated in the form of first person that is by Latino boy. The story is mostly showing the struggle of immigrant family as they arise from the nightmare in Santo Domingo simply to realize they are in another dream. Yunor’s father is hot tempered, abusive and a pretty man. The basic idea that the narrator is trying to convey from the poem is a father starving his own son by denying him food and sympathy. The inability of a mother to challenge his wife with no consequences and brother’s inability to safeguard him is disclosed.
The poem “Daddy” is more confessional as Plath assaults both her father and the husband in symbolic manner. This is seen where she relates herself to a Jew and her father as Hitler, due to her father’s dictatorship character. The image created means that she feared him. Plath also introduces her husband as a man who is black and a “model” of her dad. This means that his character was that of her dad and this is explained in the story according to the period of seven years of marriage. She is beginning to hate the memories of her father who died while she was 8 years of age leaving her as a young girl at a tender age and therefore she needs to stop such memories permanently.
Both poems give the same suggestion that is struggle with fathers however the title for both poems show significant differences because in the Fiesta 1980, there is a hope for the characters to bring hopes for creati9ng a better relationship with her father whereas in Daddy, there is no hope due to the fact that their father is not alive. In addition, Fiesta 1980 outlines a detailed characters connection with mother while in Daddy there is no any outlined figure for the mother’s relationship as argued by Murray (25). The short story on Fiesta 1980 is reflecting the life of young child at middle age. Yunio’s father was very cruel and therefore this actions of affected him and his family at large. This also affected him as a father. His wife realizes all the pressures but she plans to remain silent. His strictness towards the children. Yunior enjoyed life with his father and felt loved. The poem “Daddy” is as a result of temper and she tries to control her temper by making another father in her husband. Her husband is explained in two metaphors, a Nazi and a Vampire. Vampire “drank her blood”. Which shoes how similar her husband was to her father. A Nazi is a metaphor applied to show the pains.
The poem “Fiesta 198”, happens one day in life of the twelve year old Dominican- American narrator who is referred to as the Yunior, set on a day when his family is presence in the aunt’s party in the Bronx. From the beginning of the story, it is noted that things are okay and in good terms in Yunior’s house. The story basically is about the way the event affects the narrator of the poem (Murray 28).
In both works, there are emotional difficulties that arise in parent –children relationships. In “Fiesta1980” Yunior has some hopes for the closure while in “Daddy”, the speaker is faced with a problem, and is suffering from stress and therefore wants to delete the stress about the dead father from her memory. In my own opinion of the two works, “Fiesta 1980” seems to be the most constructive, realistic and positive in a way. Although parts of this story are funny, there is a sense of real pressure between mother and her son. Nevertheless later in the story, the relationship is seen as the cause of conflict between Yunior and Rafa due to their father’s recklessness. Brothers have strong bond despite helping one another, they rely on each other for support and comfort.
In conclusion, both stories were very interesting and realistic although analyzing Yunior’s thoughts discloses the fact that he is young and suggestible main character. The author has suggested emotion of empathy as the reader goes silently to support the main character within the outlined family of five.
