For your final assignment in this class, you will write a paper that explores the question: What does it mean to be American? Your task for the Week 5 discussion post is to draft your paper and post it for your classmates to respond to so that you can revise and rethink your essay. Here are the parameters of the post:

Your answer to the question “What does it mean to be American?” must be no longer than 3 pages of type-written, 12-point, double-spaced font, and include the following elements:

a. an exploration of the role of the American West in the formation of American identity

b. specific reference to both Richter’s Facing East from Indian Country and Coates’s Between the World and Me to support your answer. Since we are all familiar with these two course texts, there is no need to cite them as sources.

c. connections to material from the Week 5 lectures, Western Themes and Myths, Parts I and II.

d. analysis of how your sense of America has changed over the course of the semester. How did your perception of America shift? How did it remain the same? Be sure to describe the events, ideas, discussions, lecture elements, or thought processes that contributed to the alteration (or reaffirmation) of your sense of American-ness. Include at least three specific examples to support your explanation.

Your essay should use complete sentences and correct grammar.
