Question: Perhaps the most dominant theme in The Liar’s Club is the classic “coming of age” story. How do the trials and tribulations that take place in this story aid in the shaping of adulthood of the women in this story?

Thesis: Mary Karr’s The Liars Club is an extremely detailed memoir that depicts the lifestyle of a young girl who is growing up in an era where her entire species is thought to be far less than equal. The trials and tribulations that Karr and the women in her family go through ultimately lead to strong independent women with the willpower to defy the social norm on a regular basis. And it is through that regularity that they adopt the idea of fighting back, which in turn becomes their mindset for the rest of their lives. Whether that be Charlie getting a job or Lecia protecting herself, they now know what it means to be a woman in their eyes.
