Film Paper Selection

Please turn in the names of the five films you will view and research. I need one paragraph on each one telling me why you selected that film.

List:

Film.................. Genre.................Category for class

Narrative--"why" ( one paragraph--at least five sentences no more than ten)

Example:

Sing'in In The Rain          Musical          Golden Age of Hollywood

                                    Narrative

"I selected Sing'in In the Rain because film historians have said this film is considered the essential musical to view as far as talent, script, studio production values and audience acclaim. MGM, during the Golden Age , was considered the top studio for musicals. this film shows off the talent of Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and a soon to be star--Debbie Reynolds. Americans liked the film and so did the Oscars.

1. One film must come from the Silent Era. “The Jazz Singer” may be considered in this category. Chaplin’s “Modern Times” is accepted for this section. Up to 1930.

2. One film must come from the “Golden Age” of Hollywood, from the 1930 to the 1950’s.

3. One film from 1960’s to 1980’s

4. One film from 1990’s to present

5. One film of your choice. BUT, THIS PERSONAL CHOICE MUST HAVE BEEN MENTIONED IN THE TEXT OR NOMINATED BY THE GOLDEN GLOBES OR THE OSCARS. AND, IT MUST FIT INTO THE FIVE DIFFERENT GENRE ASSIGNMENT.

6. Select the five from a list of different genre: Drama, comedy, musical, western, combat, romantic comedy, science fiction, coming of age, dramedy, horror, film noir, ethnic, gender or sexual orientation films mentioned or nominated (Examples—Juno and Boyz‘n the Hood) and documentary films that are at least one hour long and have gotten nominated for an award somewhere. The films can be foreign or from the United States. If you are unsure of a film choice, email me for a discussion. REMEMBER—FIVE DIFFERENT GENRE. EACH REVIEW MUST BE LABELED FROM A SPECIFIC FILM ERA STATED AT THE TOP OF THE REVIEW. One file will be turned in on Canvas with all five films. Upload with PDF or Docx.

7. Your film list MUST BE TURNED INTO ME ON CANVAS BY THE END DATE OF THE SECOND EXAM. List the films and give a very short statement (no more than one paragraph) on why you selected this film. TWENTY-FIVE POINTS.

8. Watch the film and research the definition of the film genre you have selected. An example: what has been the formula for the romantic comedy over time? Has that formula changed in time?

9. Research and discuss the key film cast: Actor, Actress, Supporting roles

10. Research the director and producer—which studio (s) distributed the film

11. Any key artists involved: cinematographer, editor, art director, etc.

A STUDENT CAN WRITE A REVIEW FOCUSING ON THE ARTIST: An example: Would “Citizen Kane” be the same film if Greg Toland had not been the cinematographer? Film is a collaborative process and your paper should reflect that.

12. Did the film correspond to similar films in that genre? An example: does “Blazing Saddles” stay within the formula of the western genre? Whichever five genres you select, ask that question.

13. In each essay there should be a review of two scenes that you feel helped make the film work. Discuss: lighting, use of color, shot selections, editing, angles, etc.

14. Critical reviews, box office and any award nominations

15. Your assessment of the story and the film.

16. Use a narrative format. You can use an outline format but only in a narrative style.
