Project 1: Assessing Your Strategic Leadership Capacity and Potential

-

January 25

Dear

Thank you for your work on Project 1.    This initial review of the documents will form the basis for the final project which is due towards the end of the term.

You have obviously taken these assignments seriously and I appreciate it  I was intrigued to read the skills you have and the importance you placed on each.  I do think you will find you have more knowledge and skills than you think as you move through the other projects in this class.  It will be interesting to see the changes at the end of the term when you complete the first project by re-doing the spreadsheet.

Your LDP is clear and to the point, fitting most of the criteria. Have you done this type of goal setting previously?  The skill development areas on this document seem quite appropriate for the goal and quite ambitious.  They certainly support the overall SMART goal.  Nice work there.

On the Gap Tables, you have included some observable outcomes and some that have to do with more indirect demonstrations of attainment. You will need to specify observable activities (e.g., complete a training program in leadership, read one book a month on leadership) and to then identify stronger outcomes.  Outcomes must be visible and verifiable proof of what you have done.  One way to do this is to complete a professional journal in which you record your "lessons learned" related to specific topics.  I have found such an activity to be very useful and it keeps a record of what I have done and where I have knowledge and skills.  What do you think about this?

You can re-do these documents at this time or wait until you submit your updated assessments at the end of the term.  I look forward to working with you over the term to develop further your skills and abilities.

Please do let me know if you have any questions.

Dear

This is an excellent project---which was clear from its earlier documents.  You worked hard on this with a sustained commitment to growth and learning.  Thanks.

I am most impressed with this and I can tell you that it clearly surpasses our expectations for the class.  This means a grade of A (or 100 in points) for the project.

I want you to know that I give very few grades of A in this class---maybe 4 out of 25 projects, so you should be proud of the work you have done.  I certainly am.

Your writing is very professional and concise.  Your logic is clear and you have done a good analysis of each functional area and process.  The carefully built descriptions and subsequent critiques are well-constructed (i.e., scaffolded), and you use management content appropriately within the text through citations.   I think you will want to work on your informed argumentation as you move through this course and others, trying to bring together theories and research from different ideas.  For example, you might look at structure and leadership together, identifying how they influence each other as seen in both theory and research.   This will come to you as you become more conversant in discussing, and adept in using, the management literature.  You have a good start here.

You are moving on and providing solid research and analysis.  I am impressed with the quality of what you are doing and look forward to seeing your final recommendations.

Nice job on the strategy section.  You do have the model down pat and have used it well.

Yes, Apple is certainly not competing on price!  They do product differentiation, often using the same strategy implemented by luxury brands.  One could probably argue that they ARE a luxury brand, don't you think?

You seem to be moving along fine and l look forward to more of the report.

The Fact Sheet looks good. I did not literally mean for you to rename it Milestones 7,8,9, unless you were submitting those particular milestones.  Just label it something appropriate like "resubmission of Fact Sheet."

Nice work on it.

Dear

Thanks for the first milestones on Project 2.

I think that one page, with lists only (like a table) for a Fact Sheet, would be best.  It should be a type of Appendix or Reference page for the reader of the document.  So, it can be in another format and should make it easy for the reader to look up facts about the company as they go through the report (e.g., size, structure, location, etc.).

Your text part of the report (MVVG) is perfectly well done.  Your format is good and the content is appropriate.   You have started your References and report, so just add new sections to the same document and you will be ready to go.  I will now where you started if the name of the file indicates content such as "Milestones 7 8 9".  That way you can build the paper and not have to do any cut-and-paste work at the end.

Great job,

Professor

Dear,

Thanks for the work on Project 3.  You did a solid job of grounding it in theory and using the three areas to support your recommendations.

You need to start the memo from why you are doing the report (the incident that caused the request for a report) to remind Ms Lindsay of what you are presenting and why.    You want to use that conceptual framework to analyze the company to see if it can respond to the type of incidents that started the entire discussion.  You did tell what documents you reviewed, but did not identify any risks you discovered from those.   You have identified some recs, but they need to be linked back to the original incident.

The presentation was nicely done, with good visuals and a good voice track.  You might think about using fewer words---and not full sentences--in the slides.  There should be only key words and you want to look for a 30% visual and 70% oral balance. Here also, you want to think about adding more on the specific risks that the company faces in light of these issues.  You do use theory and describe the organization, but this should look directly at risks, so we can see the recs flow directly from the id of risk.   Again, did you think about specific examples of “hot spots” where you need to work?

All in all, it is a good project and I hope it makes you more attuned to how these three areas really to interact and create risks, but ones that are manageable for most organizations.

Dear

I really do appreciate your detailed annotations on these articles and I was able to get a good "feel" for the research and reports from your notes.  I thought the Mayer article was interesting but you did not include a full citation.  I assume this was just an oversight as you were putting together the info.  There is no need to re-do it, but make sure in your references list on the PPT presentation that you do have it fully noted, ok?

You will be writing more annotations later in the MBA program, and my only recs are that you make the content a bit more concise, and think about adding info on these two items: (1) limitations of the article/study [e.g., size of sample, populations (male versus female, combination, etc.), or geographical or context foci (one country only or one type of business/context)]; and (2) how the article might be used best by a researcher.

I look forward to the completed project.
