Unfortunately your proposal has not met the minimum requirements for a pass mark. First, you need to read the assignment brief carefully and ensure that your proposal is aligned with the client's requirements.

You need to be aware of the scope of their activities and why the SIT commissions this research. SIT is a key organization within the University of Leicester, and as part of the ESD initiative, their primary mission is to promote eco-consciousness among UOL students through marketing campaigns and educational programmes. Hence, SMEs will not fall within the remit of the promotional and educational campaigns. By going off brief, you are unlikely to secure the bid from the client.

You also confuse qualitative interview with questionnaire survey, which render the discussion of the data collection method inconsistent with the exploratory research design your propose to use.

You do however show some understanding of particular research theories, though they are misapplied in the context of this study.

Background and aim/objectives

While you have tentatively discuss how Covid-19 has renewed interest in climate change agenda, the rationale of your research focus (SMEs) is not relevant to the information need of the Social Impact Team (SIT). Indeed, you have not acknowledged the Social Impact Team in this section and debrief why they have commissioned this study in the first place.

Consequently your research aim and objectives do not reflect the information need of the SIT. From your objectives, I am unclear whether you are conducting a qualitative or a quantitative research. Objective 1 - to understand - would suggest the use of a qualitative research while Obj 2 and 3 - to determine - would suggest the use of quantitative research. When resubmitting your assignment, you need to be clear whether the SIT would benefit from an in depth exploration of the subject or to verify existing hypothesis. You should then develop your research objectives to reflect the methodology of your study.

Methodology and data collection

You seem to have proposed the use of exploratory qualitative research, yet you have utilised survey/questionnaire, which is a quantitative instrument. Additionally, you need to discuss the rationale of your research design in the context of this study.

Given survey is a quantitative method, you would not use open ended questions as you would be required to quantify your data. However, on reading your essay, I wonder if you have meant to conduct qualitative in-depth interview instead? If so, you would usually utilise a semi-structured interview and prepare an interview guide (rather than questionnaire) that consist of topics and ooen ended questions for each. You would - as per usual - need to justify why you have chosen an in-depth interview and how it will enable you to address the research objectives.

Sampling

Similarly this section lacks details and is discussed in a superficial manner. What non-probability sampling method do you intend to conduct and why? Please note that non-probability sampling does not require a sampling frame.

Given the focus of your study is off topic, unsurprisingly your sampling criteria does not reflect the target population required by the client. You therefore need to redefine your sampling criteria. What characteristics do your participants share? Or do you interview participants who hold different views on the topic? Once you have defined your sampling criteria, you need to consider how many interviews you would allocate to each grouping - which you have defined base on your sampling criteria additionally, you need to consider how you intend to recruit your participants to ensure that those recruited met your sampling criteria.

Timeframe

The gantt chart shows relevant research activities that span the 6 months period.

However do be mindful that qualitative research is iterative in nature and may well require the researcher to conduct more data collection after data analysis - especially when the data collected has not yet reach saturation point.

The credentials provided highlighted your agency's experience. A cover page would have given your proposal a professional touch. Unfortunately, due to the above reasons, this may not be a bid that the SIT opt for.

Lastly, please make sure that you provide evidence and references to support your methodological justifications. More crucially, you need to consult the readings provided for you on the reading list whilst demonstrate your own wider reading.
