Guidelines for Essay 1: Appropriation and Erasure in Visual Art

- Address all questions below in essay form, not bullet points or notes. - Your research should include (and be limited to) sources in Dossier 1. - You are encouraged to include your writing for Dossier 1. But remember to cite your

sources, not individual assignments!

I. Define Appropriation. o Discuss one visual example that illustrates what you think is key to

understanding appropriation in visual art.

o Include an image of the appropriative work and (at least) one referent image in the Appendix of Images (along with one caption and reference per image).

o Remember to include all references in the Works Cited page. II. Discuss an example of Erasure in visual art.

o Is erasure also appropriative?

§ In what ways is Erasure similar to Appropriation?

§ In what ways is Erasure different from Appropriation? III. To what extent is Erasure (or revisionist imagery) appropriative? Why does this

matter today? Give a specific example, such as removal of Confederate statues, etc.

Additional research is strongly discouraged.

Format:

- 2-4 pages (double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font), page numbers. Footnotes in the body of the essay. Include an Appendix of Images, each image must include a caption and

a source. All sources should be included in a separate Works Cited page using Chicago

style. Remember to underline your thesis!

- Remember to submit your final essay as a single pdf.
