Extended Definition Assignment: Poverty

Poverty is a complex concept that denotes deficiency of something either below average levels or in extreme cases. In most cases poverty is associated with material possessions precisely money because it is money that is used to buy and sustain wealth. In the world today, people are ranked in terms of social status based on the amount of money they have at their disposal and also are likely to have. For instance, countries are grouped into developed, developing and less developed countries based on economic status of that particular country. This outrightly means that lack of finances makes one poor. This is the real situation on the ground because when I was growing up, I came to learn that children from families that could not afford basic things could be classified as children from poor families. I also learned that such families could miss out on a lot of things that families from average and high economic classes could afford as depicted in these two images

However, apart from financially associated kind of poverty, there are many other ways people can be poor. This is to mean that they might have finances necessary to take care of personal and family bills but still remain poor. For instance, a person can be poor socially due to lack of quality, reliable and trustworthy friends that the person can depend on. A perfect example is a situation where a person is filthy rich but does not have family and friends to enjoy the wealth with. Such a person hence tends to lead a lonely and isolated kind of life resulting into a socially poor person.

Lack of good health is also another way a person can be said to be poor in terms of health. This is because such a person lacks what other healthy people have. As a matter of reality, poverty from a health perspective does not depend on the amount of money one might have because when health poverty strikes, it can affect any person and wipe out available finances and social friends leading to increased levels of poverty.

All in all, poverty hurts the affected parties, and this means that it is the duty of every member of the society to do everything possible to fight poverty. Concern USA and the World Bank in their respective websites claims that human beings play a huge role in the amount of poverty they get subjected to. For instance, leading an unhealthy lifestyle that increases chances of contracting diseases is one way people attract health kind of poverty (StudySmarter). Failing to build a strong bond especially with family and learning to differentiate between good and pretentious friends gradually attracts social poverty. On the general poverty, there are unavoidable circumstances but there are some levels of personal failure that leads to poverty. For instance, engaging in illegal business creates room for loosing even the genuine resources. Failing to make a decision on career path that one is passionate about also reduces chances of exiling economically. Nevertheless, there are collective causes of poverty for instance unequal distribution of resources and selfish behaviors like corruption and fraud. These are things that should be handled professionally to make sure they are resolve.
