According to APA divisions (APA 2018) I would join the Society for industrial and organizational psychology know as SIOP. SIOP (2018) outlines all the tools that would help me with continued education by providing monthly newsletters, journals and e-newsletters. SIOP offers a yearly conference that will provide education and training sessions. The yearly conference is also a great way to network with other professionals in the field. Leonard (2015) suggests the best way to gain expertise in your field of psychology would be to self study, gain knowledge by other professionals by asking questions, pulling knowledge and observing in action. Some great ways to gain expertise in my area a study would be job shadowing people in the related field. Internships are a great way to gain expertise and also could lead to future employment in the IOP field.

Good evening class,
At this point in time, I would join either the Educational Psychology or the School Psychology just because that fits into my current role in the educational system. I could and probably would change that due to future endeavors within the forensic field. Through the school psychology, it would be applied through the “delivery of comprehensive psychological services to children, adolescents and families in schools” (American Psychological Association, 2019). On the website, there is a variety of useful information such as contact information, newsletters, conferences to attend and publications directly related to this division. I would use the division of school psychology to continue my education by attending their events and by using the resources that they provide to gain more knowledge in the area and understand the requirements for becoming a school psychologist or counselor. The website for Division 16 of School Psychology has many resources and opportunities for people of all educational levels. This includes new careers as well as leadership opportunities. There are other ways to gain expertise in forensic psychology. With the world at our fingertips, having the internet gives us the vast opportunities of taking online classes, reading books and publications online as well as attending online seminars. All of these resources will hold valuable information for whichever field the psychologist wants to enter.

As I am pursuing my Master of Psychology with an Emphasis in Industrial Organizational Psychology, of the American Psychological Association divisions, I would join division 14, Society of Industrial Organizational Psychologists (APA, 2019). A few months ago I contacted the Puget Sound Association of I-O Psychologists as I was interested in joining the group. I emailed back and forth with the president of the association and he agreed to allow me an interview to learn more about his experience in the field. He has also indicated that he had added me to the group email list, and would keep me updated on upcoming meetings of the group. I greatly appreciate this, as I would like to attend meetings and trainings, as well as network with professionals in the field and find internship opportunities.
Perusing the SIOP website (SIOP, 2019), I also found several resources such as lists of prospective meetings, jobs and media for interested members. Using these resources are a few ways I plan to hone my skills and become familiar with the general practice and parlance of I-O psychology, while studying this profession.
Volunteering at applicable vocations that utilize the skills we are acquiring is also an excellent way to gain expertise in our psychological emphases. I have a friend who is a forensic psychologist, working at the local inpatient psychiatric hospital. In the past five years, I have heard of several work-related injuries that employees of this hospital have sustained, usually at the hands of patients. A month ago I asked my psychologist friend if there was an Employee Safety Department at the hospital, or perhaps a specialized division associated with Human Resources. I desired to consult with the entity about the about the hazardous situation. It took a few weeks, but this week my friend emailed me that a volunteer opportunity is emerging where I can become involved at the facility in an applicable capacity. I am hopeful this prospective experience will deepen my understanding of the field.
Additional ways beyond society participation and volunteer/internship opportunities include subscription and study of associated journals, newsletters, and division-sponsored publications. For my field, I can specifically review the Industrial and Organizational Psychology journal, the quarterly published Industrial-Organizational Psychologist newsletter, as well as Principles for Validation and Use of Personnel Section Procedures.
