PURPOSE of our PROJECT
The purpose of our project is to recommend a technology that will help with communication during and after a hurricane.
AGENDA of our PRESENTATION
In this presentation, we will
explain natural disasters, especially hurricanes, and their impact on communication systems.
recommend satellite phone technology (sat phone) not only for relief workers but households, because satellite phones work during and after a hurricane.
describe what satellite phone and accessories to buy or rent.
Natural Disasters impact communication
Communication can be compromised during a variety of natural disasters, including hurricanes.
Compromised communications systems can be the difference between life and death, especially during the rescue phase of a natural disaster (Richards, 2015).
Having a good disaster response plan can help people through a crisis; maintaining access to communication should be a key part of the plan (Maurer, 2014).
Satellite phones are lifesavers during hurricanes because satellite phones work when cell towers are down and cell service is disrupted. Sat phones use satellites, which are typically deeper in space than weather events (Tobias, 2014).

We Recommend Households own Sat Phones
We recommend that if you live in a hurricane-prone area, such as the Caribbean, you have a sat phone for communication during a hurricane.
The service rate may seem expensive, but it is worth the safety it provides (Tobias, 2014).
Satellite phones can make and receive calls.
Especially during the rescue phase of a hurricane, people who need aid can use satellite phones to communicate their situation and confirm their location to rescue workers (Richards, 2015).

Purchase a sat phone and key accessories
Accessories
Buy an extra battery because during a hurricane, there will be no electricity to charge your phone.
Buy a handset docking station to hold the phone when not in use.
Sim Card
Buy a sim card ONLY IF you want to. It is optional.
Internet Availability
Buy a internet subscription ONLY IF you want to. Note that the data can load slowly.
Rental Option
Rent a sat phone during the hurricane season if you cannot afford to buy one (Tobias, 2013).
