Final Project: The Internet

The Internet: my medium of choice

‘’Media used to be one way. Everyone else just had to listen.

Now the internet is allowing what ussed to be a monologue to become a dialogue. I think that’s healthy.’’

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

I have choseen the internet as my medium to study because I believe it is the one that has the most impact over and will keep on developing over the next decades. Moreover, William H. Dutton (2013, p. 224) states that internet has expended considerably over the last decade, howerver, this growth was unequally spread through the world. Consequently, a great future is waiting the Internet. Understanding it and its potential effect on the mass communication would be of great interest. Another reason is simply that nowadays, Internet is a integral part of our life, participating to this online course just prove it. Therefore, I want to discover more about it.

Significance of the Internet

In 1969 with the invention of the ARPANET, the interest was purely strategic for the U.S Army.

Then progressively the network expended to the Universities and Scientists, allowing them to communicat and share information. This same need of sharing through long distance was at the origine of the development of the Web which permit to the public to access to it. The more the internet spreaded, the more ressources were available making it an essential source of information.

Soon a monetary interest appeared, with so many people connected financial benefits could be gained (E-commerve, Advertising). Social media also came into play involving people into creating their own content and sharing personal experiences. Nowadays Social media became part of our life: facebook has‘’more than 150 million unique visitors in a typical month’’(Dominick, 2013). Internet also reshaped the model for News even though it didn’t really affect the time spent on other medium. Traditional News media tract internet and social media for breaknews as they are, now, the first one spreading them.

The Internet also have various negative impact such as the diminution of productivity at the workplace. Other question could be raised about the lack of gatekeeper, the privacy concerns or the isolation it could create.

To sum up, the internet significance has increased taking more and more importance over our life. What would happen if the Evernet become reality ?

The Internet influence on my life.

Personal life:

Reflecting on my personal use of the internet, I would acknowledge the usage of social media has been the first one. It allows me to keep in touch with friends and family wherever I am. I also noticed that for the last 3 years I tend to connect through my mobile device which follow the going mobile trend of the Web.

Professional life:

As a professional the internet give the chance to extend my opportunities through the entire world. I use internet to look and apply for job all around the world. I recently obtained an internship in Barcelona for a company that has its headquarter in Germany. Everything was made possible thanks to Internet and application such as Skype that allowed me to do a face-to-face Interview without moving from my room.

Student life:

Universities were part of the first one to get involved in the Web. They still stay up-to-date as we are provided E-book or provide only course. It allows us to access to information, resources and even entire courses from various location.
