The Health Effects of Coffee

The average American consumes two cups of coffee a day, so it’s safe to say that it can have some kind of effect on our health. The origin of coffee is directly from a bean plant, and like most plants we consume they can leave us with beneficial health effects. On the other hand, if coffee is consumed too often that can leave negative effects on our health. Like most things people enjoy consuming, coffee seems to be ok for our health when we have it in moderation. It can leave lasting negative effects when too much of it is consumed on the daily. The way that sources display information about the correlation between coffee and health are through giving examples of scientific studies that have been done on the topic. One scholarly source that discussed this topic was from MDPI publishing titled, “Health effects of coffee: Mechanism Unraveled?”. This statement shows how the authors prove that there is a correlation between coffee and health using logic. This is also a good example of how this source is credible, they explain a study done by another official source and state the sample size, which helps show how they stay honest and present their information. Another scholarly source that talks about the health effects that coffee can have is, “Effects of Coffee Consumption on Health”. This source applies logic in their writing by providing their audience with studies and statistics to support their claims. The author claims that there’s a lower likelihood to develop breast cancer by drinking coffee by saying that “consumption of four cups of coffee per day was associated with a 10% reduction in the relative risk of breast cancer, only in postmenopausal women” (Gómez Leyva, 2021). They are using a statistic to prove their claim to their readers. The another’s are also being credible in their writing citing where they got their information from. To show that what is being said should be trusted the authors state, “The  European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, in people aged 25-70 years from ten European countries, consumption of caffeinated coffee was inversely associated with melanoma risk among men, but not among women” (Gómez Leyva, 2021). When readers see how the writers provide where they get their information from it’ll make the authors seem more trustworthySee?. Another article that discusses this topic is “Is coffee good or bad for your health” from Harvard’s School of Public Health. To prove their claims about coffee and health they use quotes from credible people (Harvard’s School of Public Health, 2021). The author also uses logic by going into some limitations that appeared in recent studies relating to the correlation between some diseases and coffee consumption (Harvard’s School of Public Health, 2021). It was published by MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute) which has, over 115,000 experts who are committed to giving quality service while supporting strong values (MDPI, 2021). The authors of this source are all from “West-German Centre of Diabetes and Health, Duesseldorf Catholic Hospital Group” (Kolb, 2020). Vetting – WHY the source is considered scholarly AND why it can be believed (where published, where the data came from) Since they are from reliable health organizations and are writing about a health-related issue this makes them a credible source. Their purpose in writing this review was to inform people that there are, “positive health outcomes associated with habitual coffee consumption in the general population, and this has changed the perception of coffee from that of a luxury stimulant drink to that of a health promoting beverage,” (Kolb, 2020). The review titled “Effects of Coffee Consumption on Health” was written by Berlis Gómez Leyva, María Teresa Díaz Armas, Regla Cristina Valdés Cabodevilla, and Manuel Alejandro Miguel Cruz. It was published by MediSur which is a medical publishing company, and this specific article was edited at the University of Medical Sciences of Cienfuegos (Gómez Leyva, 2021). Having a medical background makes this source credible, and the authors are a part of The Higher Polytechnic School of Chimborazo and Florida International University (Gómez Leyva, 2021). Since the authors have a good education-based background this will give the readers a reason to trust their claims.

Another article that talked about this subject was, “Is coffee good or bad for your health”, which was written by Harvard’s School of Public Health. This source often quoted Frank Hu who is the chair of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (Harvard’s School of Public Health, 2021). This source talks about a study that, “linked coffee to diseases ranging from heart disease and asthma,” but then it goes onto saying, “Hu noted that many participants in those studies also smoked,” (Harvard’s School of Public Health, 2021). This shows credibility because the writer points out a limitation that was found in a study, they didn’t just feed the information to their audience without telling them any background Important statement as it explains that the source avoided bias and provided all the info, not just some. The purpose of this article was to make people aware that coffee can have positive health effects. For example, Hu states, ‘“In the past, I think a lot of people thought, ‘Oh, coffee’s so delicious, there must be something bad about coffee,’” he said. “So I think the good news is that [for] most people, coffee actually confers some health benefits,”’This was an interview with Dr. Hu about his research, hence the “I/Me/My” statements are okay to use here (Harvard’s School of Public Health, 2021). All three sources about the connection between health and coffee consumption appear to be credible. The article written by Kolb uses logic well when they present their information to their audience, they provide the sample size of the study and explain where the study takes place. This is also useful to show that they are a credible source. The source written by Gómez Leyva was also credible because everyone who helped write it had a great education background and it was edited by a medical school. Logic was also shown well because the authors used information found in studies to support their claims. Also, the article written by Harvard’s School of Public Health used logic by providing information given from a reliable source from Harvard. It also appears to be credible because it makes the reader aware of some limitation that could have affected the provided studies. Nice summary of findings, why sources can be trusted.

The correlation between coffee and physical health are shown in sources by providing information from scientific studies and are given from medical experts. By supplying their readers with trustworthy information their audience will feel more inclined to hear out what they have to say. The best way to give people information is to provide them with facts and how these facts were found. According to the experts, coffee is good for physical health in moderation.
