Week 6 Homeland Security
Good afternoon everyone,
This week we are reviewing the Strategic National Risk Assessment, while comparing the WTA and SNRA. Taking the "Natural" events that have occurred across America since 2006 [i.e. post-Katrina], are the ranking of riskiest/most dangerous events in the "Natural" threats and hazards in the table on p2 logical? Why or why not"?
The Strategic National Risk Assessment (SNRA) was created to support PPD-8 to ensure the creation of a National Preparedness System, Set a National Preparedness Goal, and develop a National Preparedness Report. The WTA and SNRA are different in several aspects. The WTA focuses on attacks created by enemies based on their capabilities and how they are postured. The SNRA focuses its attention on all threats and vulnerabilities man-made or natural, that can have critical impact on the nation. One of the major differences that stood out to me, is one of the WTA's main priorities is focused on cyber threats. The SNRA focused a great deal of attention on Natural Disasters such as animal disease, human pandemics, wild fires, earth quakes, hurricanes, and even space weather.
I believe that both of these documents have appropriate focuses. They differ yet compliment efforts in many ways. The goal of both documents is to strengthen preparedness, establish and improve response efforts, along with fostering resiliency. When asked if the priorities are appropriately ranked... I would say yes and no. I believe that each threat should have the same amount of focus than the next. There are so many threats and vulnerabilities. As soon as we let our guard down with one, we will suffer tremendously. Just my opinion of course. Looking forward to your thoughts.
