Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) is a result of injury to a localized area of skin
or underlying tissue that can occur during an inpatient hospital stay (Rondinelli et al., 2018).
Often, most pressure injuries are avoidable; however, there are circumstances where pressure
injuries are unavoidable due to other medical underpinnings. There are associated factors to the
development of a pressure injury as shearing and pressure are not the only causative factors
involved. Risk factors of pressure injuries include, but not limited to, age, nutritional status,
severity of illness or trauma, perfusion, and immobility. Discerning the best type of intervention
for specific patient populations can reduce the likelihood of developing or further progression of
a pressure injury. The purpose of this paper is to examine and analyze four different peer-
reviewed journal articles that address methods and interventions for reducing and preventing
hospital-acquired pressure injuries.

Okay, the first two articles should be a good visual to help you on your way. Remember, YOU CAN do this! Dr. F
Why you chose this article and/or how it relates to the clinical issue of interest (include a brief explanation of the ethics of research related to your clinical issue of interest)
Selection of Article: I selected this article because it represents my clinical issue of interest of how hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) are prevalent in all healthcare facilities but more importantly, educating why and how the need to frequently assess and intervene is a priority. The focus is on understanding there are critical issues with skin breakdown costing the hospital money but also causing harm to the patient. Ethics of research noted by authors to include consent and maintaining confidentiality.
Selection of Article: I selected this article because HAPI is addressed on a national level generating ‘big data’ from over 16 million inpatient admissions, and then narrowing it down based on risk factors to 9 million as the population size. In addition, the study addressed the skin risk assessment tools along with comorbidities that may be overlooked in other studies on pressure injuries. Ethics of research – Within the article, patient confidentiality remained compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
Okay – see how you need to follow those keywords I highlighted.
• Why did you select the article;
• how it relates to the clinical issue; and
• explanation of ethics
Be sure to include those keywords, but without highlights. Do not have to write a “book” but be specific, to the point and provide the why and/or how, and explain ethics of research
Brief description of the aims of the research of each
The aim of this research was to evaluate outcomes when bundling risk tools with
In this study, researchers aimed to describe the risk factors of HAPI and compare the medical

conditions and costs among hospitalized patients with and without HAPIs. Additionally, this particular study focused on using rigorous methods for control and demonstrated how HAPI can become a huge expense for the healthcare industry along with a long process of healing for the patient.
Brief description of the research methodology used Be sure to identify if the methodology used was qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed-methods approach. Be specific.
Research Methodology: Quantitative method using an experimental randomized controlled trial (RCT) design which randomly assigned participants into both experimental and control groups. ** Be sure to mention both method and then, the design used
Research Methodology: Quantitative method using a retrospective observational approach to identify risk stratification and prevention systems/tools to combat HAPIs. of a HAPI.
Yes again, keywords to use: Research Methodology to include both method and design.
A brief description of the strengths of each of the research methodologies used, including reliability and validity of how the methodology was applied in each of the peer-reviewed articles you selected.
Strengths of Methodology: A few strengths associated with quantitative research method using a RCT design is….. Reliability of the study was demonstrated by providing statistical data in relation to significance (p value). Specifically, on average prevalence of HAPIs dropped to 1.2% (p value <0.0001).
Strength - This study focused on a large national database to determine a significant number of critical risk factors that can lead to HAPI. Reliability - data presented suggests reliability to include …. Validity - The validity of this study matches the reliability content such that the tools used to assess risk factors of HAPI were consistent with the results of the occurrence of pressure injuries.
Keywords to mention include strengths, reliability, and validity as it relates to each research study in particular.

Validity was demonstrated through construct as research appeared to cover all aspects associated with the prevalence of HAPIs. For example, …..
General Notes/Comments
Note, a limitation to this observational study is the large amount of data and sample size which affects the control of the study when attempting to match the number of risk factors associated with HAPI on a broad scale. This study provided a general idea of the occurrence of HAPI given key risk factors along with incorporating length of stay and costs; however, compared to other studies, this study did not state other interventions used that would allow future researchers to use with other studies.
