I enjoyed the reading by Alexie and Allende very much, hearing how they both faced adversary from an early age, but both found reading as an escape. In the reading by Alexie, I like how the writer visualize his world as a book and broke down family members into paragraphs. I was shocked to hear that in school his classmates would try and hide any sign of intelligence as if they would be punished for it. He’s consistency to achieve is very inspiring no matter what anyone around him said. Likewise, the writing by Allende was very strong in the sense of the writer's passion and love for reading. Even though reading is not a genetic thing It’s nice to see how children follow in the parent’s footsteps for the love of reading. There was a point in the Allende writing that I can relate to very much, it was when she said writers play half the role and the reader has a very active role in visualizing the words. I believe that is very true because reading words on a paper can be very dull, but it is the imagination that bring the words to life. Both writers have some things in common, they both came from minority upbringings, both were oppressed in their own ways, but they both held on to the love of reading so much that it turned out to be their biggest success and they both became writers. Another commonality was they both feel a life without reading isn’t worth much, reading the way eyes of the soul as said by Allende.
