Part II–Essay–Answer carefully the following item. Be very thorough in your essay. 30 points maximum for this item.

There are many contributions that Emile Durkheim made to sociology. He insisted that sociology must study the causes and functions of social facts.

A. Define ‘social fact.’ Use a quote from The Rules of the Sociological Method in your answer (Durkheim’s words can be found on pages 101-105 in our textbook).

B. Give examples from modern day life that are not those given by Durkheim in The Rules.

C. What causes social facts? What does not cause social facts?

D. Show clearly how Durkheim studied causes and functions of social facts in only one of these:

1. Division of Labor is a social fact. What is the cause and function of the Division of Labor?

2. Religion is a social fact. What is the cause and function of Religion?

Remember, choose either Division of Labor OR Religion, not both.

Part III–Essay–Answer carefully only ONE of the following items. 30 points maximum for this item.

1. There are many contributions that George Herbert Mead made to sociology. He insisted that his approach is called Social Behaviorism. What is that? How is it different from Behaviorism in psychology? How, in detail, does a person become a social being, according to Mead? Why is meaning so important to Mead? Discuss fully.

2. Herbert Blumer identified three major points summarizing Symbolic Interaction Theory (a) identify those three points. Give examples. (b) show how these points relate to Mead and Cooley’s theory of self development, (c) how does Thomas’ concept of the Definition of the Situation relate to Symbolic Interaction theory? Discuss fully.

3. Define the term “stigma” as Goffman does. Identify and illustrate the three types of stigma. Why is this concept sociologically significant? How do we stigmatize a person? Who does not stigmatize? How do stigmatized people react to being stigmatized? If people face stigma, why would anyone put themselves in that position? Discuss fully.

4. This item asks you to take a functionalist approach to analyzing Lehman College as a Social System. In your analysis, you will want to use such functionalist terms such as functions, dysfunction, equilibrium, consensus on values, voluntaristic theory of action, socialization, social control, anomie, among other points.
