Nursing Practice Conceptualization
The early conceptualization of nursing theory focused on the practice and the application of knowledge. One of the prominent theorists of the period, Lydia Hall identified the primary roles of nursing as being the provision of care, nurturing and support during treatment, and therapeutic through intimate care and closeness. However, she added that to become an expert nurse, the individual must have competence in adjusting the care to conform to the patient’s particular needs and requirements. Advanced practice nursing seeks to build the competence of the nurse through high level training of masters and doctoral levels to enhance their capacity to deliver care. One of the notable theorists, Virginia Henderson identified the need to establish a nursing literature that can then be used to inform the practice. She even advocated for the establishment of specialized nursing libraries globally where the caregivers can access high quality materials to inform their functions. The practice is currently known as evidence-based practice which uses existing knowledge from research and consultation with other practitioners and specialists as a basis for care (Smith & Parker, 2015). The two approaches portray nursing as specialist profession that requires adherence to standards and guidelines.
Professionalism and the application of knowledge in nursing relate to master’s essential III on quality improvement and safety. The provision requires that the expert nurse adhere to methods, processes, standards, and performance requirements to guarantee the best possible treatment outcomes. The nurses are also expected to apply quality guidelines in their practice to guarantee the best treatment results and avoid errors. Critically, expert nurses should be able to evaluate the processes, systems, and the health environment to identify shortcomings and establish measures to solve them. They also collect and analyze information to develop evidence-based strategies to improve healthcare (AACN, 2011). Therefore, modern nursing has become a highly professional discipline that focuses on safeguarding the patient and the society.
