Spring 2019 Short Story Paper

Analysis of Character Assignment

Your first paper (due March 2) allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of the short story. You will apply analytical literary skills to analyze a major character from one of our readings and produce a 800 to 1200 word paper. Special emphasis will be placed to analyze character motivations, actions, flaws and fears, and personality traits as revealed in dialogue, and thoughts and feelings to support your argument. (Use MLA Citation Style)

Papers will be graded based on (1) interpretation of main character’s personality, behavior and struggle with conflicts as they relate to the conflict of the story; (2) general observations of the theme as it relates to the character’s conflict; (3) story plot elements that highlight the character; and (4) overall evaluation of theme as it relates to readers.

You are to select a character from the following short stories read in class this semester:

(a) “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Alan Poe

(b) “A & P” by John Updike

(c) “Bullet in the Brain” by Tobias Wolfff

(d) “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston
