Ethnographic Interview Note

Yesterday, I interviewed two students at Temple University about my topic "Chinese market's contributions to American community" I met one of the student in the student center, another in the library.

Interviewee:

David-3rd year in Temple, major: finance (international student)

William- 3rd year in Temple, major: international business (international student)

The questions and answers are below:

Question1

What do you think about ethnic communities? Especially Chinatown in Philadelphia.

Answer1

David: Chinatown in Philadelphia is great, I always go to Chinatown to have meals and buy Chinese vegetables and it also a good place for Chinese new immigrants to live.

William: I really love Chinatown because I can eat different traditional Chinese food there, you know, it is great to see your hometown's snacks in American.

Question2

What do you think about ethnic market in Philadelphia?

Answer2

David: It is different from American markets, I can buy special ingredients from China. I usually cook by myself, so I go to Chinese supermarket in Chinatown once a week.

William: Products there are cheap and abundant, but it is crowd, especially on weekends.

Question3

What do you think about the contribution of Chinese market to the American community and society?

Answer 3

David: The culture in Chinatown made a difference to American culture. It makes American culture more diversity. American also can experience Chinese culture in America. It provides a place where international students and Chinese immigrants "feel at home".

William: Chinese markets help new immigrants to adapt the new environment easily, new Chinese immigrants in American could find familiar products, people, food in Chinatown.

Where you usually go to Chinatown?

Answer4

David: I usually go to Heng Fa market to buy vegetables and meats.

William: I just go there to have meals, so I usually go to different restaurants.

What do you think about the way ethnic market help Chinatown to recreate their own culture?

Answer5

David: The culture in Chinatown is like Chinese culture. People could buy a lot of different things in Chinatown, although the products are fewer categories than market in China.

William: In American, there are many ethnic markets. Chinatown is a good place for American to know Chinese culture.

What is the influence of Chinese supermarkets in Chinatown?

Answer 6

David: They make the residents in Chinatown feel more comfortable in the US.

William: They provided many job opportunities to Chinese immigrants and they play a vital role in American markets.
