· Auto manufacturer develops engine software to pass EPA exhaust emission tests, but the software causes 40x more pollution in real-world driving
· 580,000 cars sold in the US over a decade, 11M cars worldwide
· US fined the company up to $25B in civil fines, with ongoing investigations and lawsuits worldwide
· Lead engineer James Liang pleaded guilty, received 40 month prison sentence, $200,000 fine in August, 2017
· Executive Oliver Schmidt, received 7 years in prison and fined $400,000 in December, 2017. Judge: Following illegal orders is no defense.
